So I watch youtube videos and what not about minecraft, and one thing I notice alot is what i call the "bonemeal one shot". They hit a sapling BAM! tree...or whatever else they're growing.
In my case though (this was post and pre updates) my bonemeal doesn't work everytime on the
first time... mainly on trees sometimes its taken well over 10 bonemeal swipes before growth occurs....sometimes more.
Is this a normal occurrence?
With wheat I dont seem to have this muli-bonemeal swipe issue... So just wondering...

It won't grow a tree in a spot unless there is room for the entire tree, leaves and all.
That's what I thought right... See my tree device has a Cup-like area where the leaves grow into it
causing it to be simply a tree stump, the sapling is right next to the pistons that push the stump out..... But the point is after several swipes it eventually grows... It will grow, so why won't it on the first swipe?
So

I think it has to do with the size of the tree it will spawn, with each bone meal hit i would guess it is cycling the random trees until it hits one that can grow where you are trying to grow it. Just a guess.

The one shot bonemeal thing is a recent addition to the pc. It is not quite one shot though, but does take less tries. Right now as all else has said it pretty much a logical check on height, and area and grows what it can, else if restricted nothing. I just hope they add that feature in the xbox version as bonemeal even though easy to get, it sometimes a pain when you don't have a farm for them. The bonemeal has been changed somewhere between 1.3.2 and 1.4 to work more efficiently I think.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
If the tree gets a growth chance (by bonemeal or just by "random ticks") it will decide how large it grows .. and every tree type has different requirements. So if you somehow limit the growing space (for example by blocks beside it like you create with your piston pushes) it will only grow large trees... so if the sapling rolls that it wants to be a small tree it won't grow.. however this is a oversimplified summary for getting the idea, you should read: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Tree for detailed requirements and growth characteristics.

Yep Birch (white wood, if you dont follow species) only needs two blocks all around but they grow straight up to about 7-9 tall I believe. They will not spread out like the regular trees so much, much easier to farm for an hour or two and walk away with stacks of wood.
The regular tree saplings, you can actually place 4 saplings in a 2x2 and let them grow naturally. Most of the time they will all grow into a giant 2x2 tree but they do spread out. One tree then will give you almost a full stack of wood. This is how I do my trees, only works with regular tree saplings I believe, could be wrong about that one.

Awesome thanks guys! Yeah its well lit and it does appear to be random on the bonemeal swipes(Have spammed it so I know some required an excessive amount). Also I am mainly using oak trees, I'll try the birch tree see if it helps any. Right now with the way my tree machine is set up
I purposely restrict it to a height of 5-6 with almost no leaf growth and that's probably making the chances of "random tree growth" based on the wiki even more limited. i.e View of sky is obstructed, there is a structure blocking leaf growth, pistons next to sapling... Simply alot of reasons as to why its probably not popping up instantly.
I just assumed it would be instant growth everytime, since that appears to be the bonemeal's purpose.
OneShot!

Found this thread very interesting as I mainly use birch for most of my wood resources and always thought bonemeal was a one shot thing.
Funny thing.. i tried the birch tree as was suggested and wasted 5 full stacks of bone meal so
(64x5) and it refused to grow! I put a normal sapling in there boom worked on the first try.... then planted another took like 9 to grow.
lol so birch was a no go... it simply refused to grow
