Just a quick question, I was exploring an area of my original minecraft world tonight as I was expanding my city and I came across a mountain range that spans about halfway across the map that is completely cut down the middle, like somebody had taken a knife and sliced it perfectly in half...
It definately appears as a bug in generation, not a natural formation, and I was just wondering what would cause it?
It doesn't really bother me as I will probably end up clearing that mountain range and building over it anyway, but I'm just curious as to how it would happen...
The only reason I can think of is that my world was generated in the very original version of MC on xbox (1.6) and large parts of it have remained un-explored over the updates til now and that the land generation may have changed in the 1.7 or 1.8 updates which cut this mountain range in half???
Here's a quick diagram I made showing a cross section of what it looks like... (Keep in mind it runs a long way across the map, probably around 400 blocks long or more).
Thanks for any clues , like I said it doesn't bother me as I am building over the area anyway, but its odd.
Also of note is that it has happened at the end of the ocean (but is nowhere near the edge of the map).
This is not a bug, but an inevitable consequence of using unexplored areas of a 1.6 or 1.7.3 map to introduce the new terrain that came in the 1.8.2 update.
Chunks are square, so terrain that filled in the unexplored chunks after the update would fill in exactly along the chunk boundaries. If the elevation of the terrain between the two versions was quite different (e.g. flat area in 1.7.3 but extreme hills in 1.8.2) then the extreme hills terrain along the chunk boundaries would appear to have been cut with a knife.
Way back when before the 1.8.2 update, Mustache_Guy posted a thread regarding the "collision" of terrain that would occur and showing pictures of how it had happened exactly that way on the PC when their 1.8 update came into effect. I believe it was tagged with something like "old meets new."

Thanks for the reply, I'm pretty sure you are correct, I think one of the new ocean biome areas has generated on an un-explored piece of my map causing the massive straight drop-off into the sea (into really deep water).
No problems, I'll just landscape it myself over time
i had the same problem on the italic code seed. [ i][ /i] (*minus the spaces)
i had maybe 25% of my map unexplored. Update came, I flew over to the areas not explored, found a bunch of "chopped" land, and 1 huge ravine that had a crap load of other underground ravine connecting to it. That was on a small-ish island in the far south-west corner. at least the surface ravine. all the underground ones were under the ocean areas.
only had one village that was in the south-east corner that spawned with some chopped mountains. it looks weird as hell. some buildings are up 30-40 blocks, others are buried in the sand partway.
Oddly enough, that seed now spawns a completely different landscape.
It happened to my city, but in a densely populated area, on the xbox one, cutting my buildings in half. Is there any way to fix this?
Assuming you didn't Save the map after noticing the affected area, it's possible to prevent it from happening if you "roll back" to an earlier version. This also assumes you saved a copy of the TU / CU file you were using which you can move back onto your hard-drive. You also need to disconnect (i.e. pull the wire) from Live or it will automatically update to the latest version when you launch MC.
If you have already Saved the world, then Nope!, you're stuck with what you got.

I have been playing for only about 2 months now in creative mode. Yesterday I turned it on and things changed a little. Mountains are one step and ground is also. A pyramid of stone was placed over a pathway previously placed. My son is telling me it's not possible ,but I know the changes are there. Anyone know why?

So is the update what changed the stuff? Cuz it's the whole map and my mountain which I have a cabin built on was cut at the top and looks different. Arguing with my son (who knows it all lol)and he's making me angry because I know it's different.
