It feels as if the build height got reduced after 1.8. on glacier seed all of the trees on the mountains have been cut in half. Maybe this is because the update required so much memory?

Those trees grew above the build height. And nothing but clouds and entities can exist up there

Unless they were split in half through vertical ways then there is no explanation.
If vertical ways then the other 1/2 of the trees was in a chunk that never loaded. Then you updated your game. And the new generation took over
