So I've been asking myself this question, and ironically unable to answer it.
With a new Xbox looming on the horizon, do you see Microsoft creating some sort of compatibility to ensure Xbox Live arcade games work on the new console, or do you see us Xbox-ers losing our beloved Minecraft?
I don't have a PC capable of running Minecraft (I'm a laptop sort of guy due to school/work), and I'm just a bit worried what the future may hold for this game/Xbox 720(or whatever it's called)
Opinions? Insight? How is the Wii to WiiU handling virtual console?
I'm sure there will be some sort of backwards compatibility, as far as XBLA games go. Or they might port the game as it stands in the future and take advantage of the new hardware. Honestly, I really hope they go with the latter option. I'm sure Minecraft will have its place on the new console, especially since Microsoft sees how successful it has been on the current-gen abomination.
Lets just say if Micro$oft expects me to buy hundreds of xbla games again when they drop a new console they are seriously mistaken. They better let us simply redownload these games to the new console or my xbox days are numbered.
I'm being optimistic. Surely Microsoft would not want to completely upset the vast majority of their customer base by not providing some backwards compatibility for those arcade games..n

While I'm ranting about this, I want to add that paying a "rights" fee ala RockBand would also be unacceptable.
I don't think Micro$oft would miss out on the opportunity to have moneycraft I mean minecraft on their next gen con$ole.
I think moneycraft will be sticking with the Microsoft franchise for a long time yet.

so dam right they really would be idoits if they did not do backward compatibity with there new xbox consol and it is almost certain they will do backward compatibity because basically all consols do it now the wii did it so did the ps3 and the wiiU also xbox360 did it i can almost garntee it will happen and if they didn't they really are stuiped
I'd think that MC360 would most certainly run on the 720.
However, by the time the 720 comes out MC as we know it will be pretty long in the tooth. Why write in 720 exclusive stuff if 360 people can't run it? I think by the time the 720 comes out they'll come out shortly with a Minecraft II, written specifically with the 720 capabilities in mind…. like basic blocks ¼ to ⅛ the size to allow more detail, larger worlds of course, etc. I also think that the PC version can't stand to have the 720 version be so much better, so it will also (have to) be rewritten from scratch (as MC II) cause java just won't be able to handle MC II.
My crystal ball says that (gasp!) we won't be playing MC as we know it a couple of years from now (though I know some of you think/wish it can go on "forever"). In fact, many of us may not be playing MC at all- there's several "clones" in the works that put MC to shame and may become the "next big thing". If nothing else, just like the Wii/WiiU or Xbox/Xbox360, development of any "old" console games will stop and everyone will concentrate on versions of their game (or new games, period) for the new console.

this ^^^ all games die Arcade ones at that. There will be that small amount of people still playing tho.

*some* PS3 did backwards and from those I know who tried is didnt work that well.
And dont know where the 360 compatibility is then because I have had to keep my Xbox if I want to play any of those games, they dont work on mine, either of them.

I dunno, man. Minecraft really is one of those long-haul kind of games.
Everything dies man, no matter what. Even rocks have an end. The whole universe will only last until every start has burned itself out and nebulas don't generate new stars. Games die easily, minecraft (PC) has only been out (since beta) for like 4 years. I wouldn't be surprised if no one plays it anymore in 2020.
They are still adding updates to the Wii, yet I don't know anyone that plays it anymore.

Religion, has actually convinced people, that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of the day, and the invisible man has a special list. Of 10 things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do ANY of these ten things he has a special place, full of fire, and smoke, and burning, and torture, and will send you there to suffer and choke and scream for all of eternity... But he still loves you.

He didn't say Minecraft would never die, quite the opposite actually. But it's still going to last much longer than the average game. I see Minecraft becoming one of those novelty games, like ADOM, Zork, or Nethack. Once MC fades out of the mainstream, I predict it will still have quite a large cult following, which will probably still be playing 30 years from now.

Yeah, I honestly believe PC version will get too cheesy. But that's my opinion.
I want to know what is new about the 720. They never released the console picture but the controller. They also said it is 10x better than todays generation. I am not really sure, that's too general. Graphics? Serverability?

Nobody knows for sure, all we know are hardware specs of dev kits, such as Durango, that have been leaked. Rumor has it that 6 or 8-core CPUs may be used in the new console. I'm wondering if these will be true cores, or CPUs with 3 to 4 multi-threaded cores. (That's the same thing as hyperthreading, for all you Intel fans.) It's also rumored that 2 cores are purely used by the OS. I'm not sure if that means we'll actually have a "real" OS on the next console or not, but it's still interesting. Dev kits have also been reported to contain 8 - 12 GB RAM. Obviously the real console won't have as much memory, but it's still a good sign. A machine dedicated to one application format can do plenty with 4 GB RAM. It is also said that the GPU will be based on ATI’s Radeon 6670.
The only thing I know for certain, which came from Microsoft themselves, is that the console will be "six times more powerful" than the 360.

Every article I've read says Microsoft claims it will be six times more powerful. And one of those sources is IGN, which is pretty reliable. "More powerful" can mean a lot of different things though. Sadly, it seems Microsoft is focused on improving the Kinect and its features more than anything else.

if gaming ever favors motion over controllers that'll be the end of it for me. I'll no longer be a gamer.

Gaming will eventually become a program in our brains. We will not have to do anything to play a game. Honestly, I think it will happen within 40 years. But it will be like pong, and then quickly rise. We will probably be more of a computer than human sometime. (I am serious) Considering we are in the golden age of technology.

The new xbox isnt going to be backwards compatible with xbox 360 games, wether this also applies to live arcade games i'm not sure but chances are they'll make a new version for the new console.
I think a leaked presentation is more reliable than articles made by random people, saying "Herp-a-derp, nope, new Xbox won't be backwards-compatible, and it won't even have a disc drive." Not to mention what we've seen from the Durango dev kit.
