I want to try to replicate a player curser on the map and that requires a black border so I want to know this will work before I go out and get so much obsidian...
Anything large built will show up only as a grey blob on your map.
I have not tried building with straight up black wool so I do not know for sure but every time I have built something larger and checked the map, grey blob as always.
My obsidian spawn trap showed up black, but it was also over a huge lava staircase we made. I guess it was because of the contrast. This won't help you though OP :/

not necessarily... You could just mold the lava source blocks in place before pouring water over it.
