When I make pixle art I copy a pic (a SIMPLE pic) into Paint on the computer. When you zoom in you can kinda see the pixels you follow and make it up along from there.
I used that program to make a pixel art for my girlfriend. It was a 150x122 picture of her. It also has a few other features and overall it's a nice extra for planning your buildings.

I will try it,but you need to downlad the applicaton?
I swear I already knew about Paint having that 'show grid' feature for zooming in on images, but now that Minecraft's come along it feels like Paint's opened up to a world new world of ideas for me
I've never done pixel art stuff before, but already I want to dive right in at the deep end and do an image thats on the scale of anywhere up to 400x400+ haha! I'd have to use Superflat Creative for my ideas though, plus I'm not even sure if you'd be able to fly up and see it all on the ground when looking down :/
I've seen videos where people either have pixel art done block-by-block, or images that are superimposed over the ground (I think), and they were able to fly up high into the sky and view it all down below!
That kind of pixel arts are awesome, most of the videos on youtube are speed arts
