Does anybody know what the mob cap is before they stop spawning? i know the cap for spawners is just over 200 but i dont know what the natural spawn cap is? any ideas or suggestions?
The Wiki page for "Spawn" give the formula. It suggests that, in single player, the hostile mob cap is 79 for hostile mobs, 16 for passive mobs, and 5 for water mobs. However, the page lower down notes that, under certain conditions, the cap may be exceeded. Ref: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Spawn

although that did help, some of that information is for the pc version and doesn't apply. ex. on the pc version a spawner will continuously spawn mobs but on the xbox version a spawner will cap out at around 200. my mob trap gets around 30 mobs max and i have all my caves lit up. it gets way under the pc versions 79 cap limit not counting passive mobs.

I think Mustache_Guy once posted a chart that shows mobs spawning around a player on XBox to a 144-block radius, rather than the 240-block radius indicated for the PC. I'm also not sure if the "/256" is related to the world height, which is half that in our case. So, if those factors are considered, it would lower to the cap to around 54 for hostile mobs and 11 for passive ones. However, before the 1.8.2 update, people indicated that they had tamed about 17 wolves and then noted that the other passive mobs had stopped spawning. So, it would seem then that the cap of 16 for passive mobs was somewhat applicable to the XBox (at least prior to this 1.8.2 update). I don't claim to have a definitive answer for you.. and I've never seen a definitive answer to this question posted yet.
