Just wondering if anyone thinks that this may be a good idea for one of the future updates.
So at the moment, we cut down trees to get wood, get saplings, plant more trees. But, I'm wondering whether it may be a good idea if the saplings plant themselves if they are not picked up for a while. You know, only in big forested area's. Just to keep the forests etc as big as they can be. Obviously if you get a tree on it's own, then don't have it's saplings replant, as you'd end up with more forests eventually.
I just get tired of planting saplings and waiting for them to grow. (I do know about bonemeal)
Yeah, that's what I meant. Most times though, if you cut down a tree, you only get around 3-4 saplings anyhow, from my experience.
The bigger oaks sometimes yield 9 or 10 saplings, so having them all replant would really overrun an area pretty quickly. I generally collect the saplings since f find them very useful for burning in a furnace to cook single items (2 saplings per item). It's less wasteful than using coal when I have less than 8 items that need cooking.
To keep the forests growing all the time, I generally replant one of the saplings in the same spot as the trunk of the tree I just cut down. It just takes a fraction of a second right after i remove the bottom block of the trunk and has just become second nature for me now. It helps that I'm very picky about not leaving any wood up in the leaves and, therefore, not leaving any leaves floating up in the air.
Of course in order of saplings... The Oak are the easiest to get, plenty drop from those especially the big big ones. The birch would be next as they do have a tendency to drop 1-4 in my experience. And dark wood trees have a tendancy to more often than not give nothing, even when it is a leafy one. When jungle trees actually come out, they are worse than any of the rest, cause sometimes on those it takes quite a few before I even get just 1 sapling.
Of course the jungle trees are not in yet, but the rest are...
So from that logic, I believe that would be an interesting good idea, if done right. After all you wouldn't want to walk into a wall of oak...lol I am sure if does happen they will do a space from other tree kind of thing with those, as the rest have their own rules that prevent them from growing much within a certain distance of each other.:D
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
if there's a reasonable way to keep the forest in check, i dont see why not.
and since everyone's talking about their experience with saplings: to me it seems like when i start a tree farm or something the first few trees give me very little saplings, like 0-3 per tree but once i harvest and replant the first time i start getting like 10 or so per tree then have way too many by the time the 2nd or 3rd harvest is finished
You can put saplings in a furnace to burn things? Never knew that.
As I said though, it would have to be like 1 sapling re-planting when you cut one down. Even if it's not off every one you cut down, just every other one. I know they're easy to plant, saplings, but it would be a nice feature I think.
