My friend and I have tirelessly spent the past TWO WEEKS mining straight down in hopes of hitting a stronghold. I want to know if there is any "guarantee" that every map will have at least one, and I also want to know the superstitions associated with them like dig where _____ is to find it.
I don't think they have strongholds yet. They might come in the update when the portal comes. I don't have, or have ever found a stronghold, so it could also be a bug.
they did come in the 1.8 update.
at the OP:
you could just do the TNT-Piston glitch and use that to quickly scan around your immediate underground areas. looking for the perfectly squared off dark sections. if you've never heard of it, search for it on youtube on how to do it.

Out of the 20+ maps I've played since the update, I have only found one stronghold. . . and what a stronghold! . . This thing was huge, must've had 3-4 'floors', about 10 'prisons', two water fountains, spanned about 100x100 blocks, no chests , I got about 20+ iron doors and two stacks of iron bars from it. There was also a connecting library that was about 20 blocks below surface, which had some books in it's chest!!!! (sarcasm btw).
Problem is, I deleted the map and can't remember the seed
Honestly though, I don't think the strongholds are worth getting excited over. They are confusing in layout, nothing of interest in them, and pretty pointless imho.
Oh, and the TNT/Glowston + Piston glitch only works if you are right near one. They are almost impossible to make out from a distance using this.
I didn't think I had one either. Went to one corner, found a cave entrance, went down and it opened up to a huge underground ravine, and at the other end of it was a stronghold. Surprise!
I'll bet there's a very good chance you got one (or more) but random digging may take a while find it.

No, there is just seriously some maps that don't have strongholds. Like what the OP, and what many others, have been saying, some maps just simply don't have strongholds. Which really, is the stupidest thing, I don't know how the creators got away with adding these 3 huge new features (ravines, abandoned mine shafts, strongholds) and then some seeds just not having them at all.
I know every world has ravines and abandoned mine shafts, but there should be guaranteed at LEAST one stronghold, but no, they can't even do that.
I've literally checked 80% of my seed for a stronghold, and by what many, many people have been saying about not finding a stronghold anywhere on their map, I'm convinced some maps just simply don't have strongholds. It's pretty stupid.
They all should have one, thats a part of the generation program. But there's no gurantee about how big that one is. Some of them can be very small when a ravine spawns on top of them, leaving only a few blocks here and there.
Not ALL maps MAY have a stronghold. Also, to the post above, the creators DID NOT create every map. Correct me if I'm wrong but there are potentially millions of seed posibilities, given that what you type as the 'seed', relates to different posibilities.
I do believe that some seed posibilites don't have strongholds, or ravines/villages/mineshafts for that matter. It's just a matter of 'not' finding them. Check out my gamertag as the seed, I'm sure it's the one where I found that massive stronghold. May be wrong though, can't remember. : GT: Ragnarock1982
I have heard that we are all supposed to have 1 stronghold per map. That does NOT mean that its a large stronghold. I found one that was tiny and probably could have been blown up by the TNT trick if you didnt pay attention. My current one is huge though. Unless you blow up your whole map with tnt and dont find one I wont believe you dont have one.

Exactly. Every world has one, its just a matter of finding it, and hoping that its intact. If you load a copy of your seed,go to the far corner, dig down to bedrock, fill the shaft you made with TNT, blow a hole down, move over about ten blocks and repeat untill you've blasted the entire map and never found a single stone brick in the debris or found an exposed side of a stronghold, then I'll believe that you've found a seed without a single one.
And yes, they can spawn in solid rock without connecting to a cavern system or mineshaft. My primary world had one like that which was completely intact- I would have never found it had I not been digging a basement- its exit door opened to stone.

It's the world generation code. It's mostly random. It could spawn a ravine through a mineshaft or stronghold, or a village that's incomplete.

Wow you found one completely intact! Thats really cool. Everyone I have found has either been really small or giant, but it pieces and the small ones were in pieces too.

Its not very big but it had a library and a Skeleton spawner dungeon attached to it. Later on when I get a chance I'll get my seed # and where it is. There is a cavern system close to, just above it but they didnt touch till I broke a few blocks and just saw stone brick.
Okay, the seed is 604946441 . The stronghold is at x-156, z94 and the top of it is y 52. And I was wrong that it doesnt touch a cavern at all, the edge does. Its in a desert but close to the surface, and I built a ladder one block over from that which goes into the fountain room.
I am the quest writer for the Atlas Server, and the best way to find a stronghold is how we found ours: go in multiplayer with eight people, and just sprint-fly around in creative while looking at unloaded chunks. The chunks load so slowly. One of our players said "I think I see a stronghold at the edge of an unloaded chunk," we dug down over by where he was and BAM!
It's been a fun task for me. I went in and organized it, patched most of the holes, closed off loops, put up signs and decorated the place a bit. It looks much better now, is easier to navigate, and will make a fine setting for several of Atlas' campaign quests once I get some redstone in there.
I didn't, but I got bored of pressing the buttons to open the doors, so just used my diamond pickaxe to break through them. There was probably 30+ iron doors, but ended up throwing some in lava. PLus, each iron door takes 6 (?) iron ingots to make, so it saved me a lot of iron. LOL

Why would you need 20+ iron doors?
