Ok, so I found a nice village and thought I'd build a castle right next to it. Have me some vassals (When they finally turn up, that is).
From discussions from other platform folks (who have villagers), I found this isn't a good idea, unless I feel like repelling zombie attacks every single night to stop the villagers from getting wiped out.
So anyway, here's some questions about villagers....
1 - When do they show up? Next patch, hopefully?
2 - Despite looking forward to their arrival, I don't really see what they DO for you. Will they pretty much just be a benign mob, or is there a point for interacting with them?
3 - I started over and found a village, which I kept a healthy distance from (200+ squares) so the zombie raids won't happen. What I DID find is a well, with two roads going to nowhere. I assume this counts as a village? Will villagers appear without buildings? Will the zombie raids?
4 - Does the game figure a village is a distance from a well?
5 - Can I build a village (including the well)?
6 - Is there any point to laying gravel paths? Do villagers follow them?
Most of the villages I have found are small with only a few buildings. I count them as a village if they have a church. And they usually have gravel paths.
On the Xbox it is hard to say what updates will come when. I would imagine though when NPC village people show up they will just be passive mobs. As far as starting a village and having the people spawn there I doubt that would happen. But again I am not familiar with Minecraft enough to know for sure. I just started playing it when the Xbox version came out.
What I'm curious about mostly is what IS a village in the computer's thinking. If there is a well, does X by X around count as the village area, and everything outside this block is normal terrain?
Well the way villages are looked at is indeed an area. 30-40 blocks roughly i think maybe more. I don't quite remember the numbers. Where this area stems from more likely is the well. Most of this I am going from my poor memory of it as I haven't looked at the statistics for very long.
But villagers when they do come in only spawn within that area. Now to get more villagers is a whole different matter relating to the area, which is important, as that is where they spawn. Basically it is all based upon how many doors there are on a building, and it is the air blocks that determine what is a house. Something like 3-4 blocks from the doors if there is no air around it and surrounded by a block of some kind that is not an air block.
This is only a rough sketch of the idea of how it technically looks at it. on another note it is a generated structure.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
1. We can expect villagers to be in the next title update, but not in the bug patch.
2. They do absolutely nothing useful for the time being, but we will eventually be able to trade with them. I'm not sure, but I think this feature is added in 1.3.
3. It counts as a glitchy village. Obviously it wasn't formed correctly, but it's technically a village nonetheless. However, I'm not sure if villagers will spawn once they're added to the game. I don't know how it works exactly, but I'm under the impression that they will only spawn at the same time the village does (until the later update when villagers can get busy).
4. I don't understand what you're asking.
5. Of course you can build a village... same as you can build anything else. Just don't expect villagers to spawn there! However, in a later update when villagers can have baby villagers, you can add buildings onto a village in order to increase the maximum number of them.
I don't quite understand the point of villages and villagers. I know you can trade with them but that seems pointless unless they are offering some very useful items. It just seems like a waist of space as of now.

They can offer many great things. Tools (even diamond ones) Armour, food xp pots and many useful things. The downside is just finding a good enough trade to trade for.
eg a farmer may offer an emerald for 5 wheat, and a blacksmith might offer a diamond pick for 2 emeralds. 10 wheat for a diamond pick is a pretty good deal.

but, if i remember correctly, emeralds werent until 1.3 and 4j is only planning on going until 1.2.3 before they go their own way
For those wondering about the size of a village, its about 40 blocks out from the building in each direction and i think in 1.2.5 they can regonize player made buildings as a house which would expand the village and the population.

1. They'll show up when we get our 1.2.3 update (so I believe they're coming with Iron Golems to help protect them)
2. Trading was released in a snapshot so maybe we'll get trading with the 1.2.3 update? Otherwise they're just mindless NPCs ;3
3. Maybe, I dunno, its a possibility I suppose. It'll just mean you have to build walls and what not
4. Idk
5. Yes, in 1.2.3 vllagers will have children who will move into any vacant homeswhen they grow up.
6. No villagers dont follow gravel paths. Hoever I did and I quite enjoy a nice gravel path.
