I'd like to start a petition here. The censorship program clearly inhibits online play. Put up too many signs and you will find yourself with a world you can no longer play online with friends because of the resources required by the software to scan all of the signs. This added feature crashes games and prevents online play.
Here is easy solution 1: Put up a disclaimer that says "Online Experience May Vary" and take the program out entirely. Works with other games, where the online play may not match the rating of the game.
Here is easy solution 2: Provide a setting where the player can toggle on/off signs. Are you so worried you may read a sign that deeply offends you? Turn them off, and go back to living under a rock. This solution would also allow the removal of the program.
Here is not-so-easy solution 3: Provide the community the max limit of signs so we can stop crashing our worlds. Provide the community more information on the censorship program overall. Does it rescan all signs upon loading, does it only scan the signs in your loaded chunks. How does it work? ..and how can we work with it?
Put your thoughts down below. Rather than just complaining about it, let's give 4J some solutions and empower them to go to Microsoft with a problem and a solution. Sacrificing game performance by using a resource intensive scanning process to prevent vulgar signs is not a viable solution.
I second Richcraft's words. Over Party Chat and XBL messages anyone can say just about anything they please as there is no censorship program in place on either. It makes little sense to put in a resource intensive censorship program that causes lag on server startup and possible map crashes when other communications are free.
Servers that cater to a younger audience it could be put in as a parental control, but for the majority of servers there would be little need.
Has there been any official reason either from Microsoft or 4J as to why it exists?
Not sure that is possible since the censor is mainly run by microsoft through minecraft. O_o
But one thing is for sure, it is completely Insane and broken feature. Especially considering the amount of words it filters out are just dumb or make no sense from a personal view, but only make sense in the technical. Which is just flat out ridiculous. I would support though to get at least a work around if not option to have on/off.
Or just based on the Xbox live privacy settings that have parenting controls anyway.O_o
well, MC360 is submitting these signs needlessly to MS then.
It's one thing to submit the sign a user is posting right then and there when they click the Done button. it's a quick web-service call.
It's another to repeatedly scan existing post signs.
If MS is worried that somebody did a save file edit, scan all the signs during the world load. Because once the world has loaded, the signs are locked in anyway.
It's a silly concern. There is nothing stopping a player from spelling a swear word out in blocks. Or building a giant golden phalus with testes.
Creative games really don't mix well with censorship. It gets in the way.
Censorship is run by Microsoft, not 4J. So it's a little out of their control. You'd have to contact Microsoft about it.
I respectfully disagree. 4J brought Minecraft to Xbox, therefore they have a stake in voicing community concerns to MS on our behalf. When you trade server stability and the abillity to host online with your friends to keep a sign from displaying a dirty word that's an issue. The program is impacting the usability of the game, so I would argue 4J does in fact have the ability and responsibility to speak up to MS. Where else do you see this kind of censorship on Xbox? I can send you a message full of swears right now gamertag to gamertag. If they don't do it to their own messaging system, why do it in Minecraft?

4J has about as much voice on the matter as we do. We may think it's stupid, but Microsoft doesn't... care what we think.
Microsoft forces the censorship of Minecraft because the game is rated E. Xbox, as a console, is unrated. Therefore, the console is not subject to the same restrictions.
Yeah, I bet if we scream loud enough 4J will change what they have absolutely no power over.
Microsoft has complete control over censorship, not 4J. If you want signs in the game, then you're just going to have to deal with it.
See argument above, I have to disagree. We have not even been told why the censorship is in place. MS does not censor their own Xbox live messages to this degree. There is inconsistently, so at the very least an explanation would be nice. If we remain silent about the issue, sure it will never get fixed.
Basic argument is this: Censorship program impacts functionality of the game. Too many signs = server crash due to resources required for censorship program to rescan signs. Tell me how 4J doesn't have a reason to do something about this.

Just because 4J brought Minecraft to the Xbox 360 doesn't mean they have any say in how Microsoft runs its own company/business. They aren't a part of Microsoft and are affiliated solely because they were hired to make ports of games for the Arcade section of Xbox Live.
They've already brought it up to Microsoft and nothing has been done yet. I'm sure that says enough.
My Minecraft world crashes about 50% of the times I load it up.
Why?
Because it scans EVERY SIGN IN THE WORLD upon loading. In my warehouse alone, I have like 100 signs...
wow... that is a lot of signs. I don't put that many even in my warehouses. I usually use the actual block when possible to tell at a glance without having to read...:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.

There's no room for blocks in my public warehouse.
But I did use the block method for my private, secret warehouse.
Of course, they're both pointless now, as Creative mode is available =\
Not something I care too much about but I would definitely be for this. I do also agree that it's pretty much a pointless rule, then again, it is rated 10 and up and there are kids that roam the servers.
I tried to name my mob traps with military code designations. IE "Trap Alpha", "Trap Bravo", ect,. The censorship wouldn't let me place a sign with "Trap Bravo". Instead each line read: "Censored". It's like wtf? Kind of ridiculous if you ask me.
is this why I can't play this game with my friends?! If I even have one friend in my game they are complaining about how horribly laggy it is the whole time. I might have like 15 or 20 signs in my world. I can play any other game just fine with my connection, so its not that.
I have no idea from a technical standpoint how this works, but I have to believe that 4j can make requests to microsoft. Also, they censor things that don't even make sense. I guess "strip" is a dirty word now because I can't write a sign that says "this way to strip mine".
Wow. I didn't know about this. I wondered where the lag came from and weird "censored" messages on my signs. That is really dumb. I only even play with friends anyway, and like fairliedaft said since the servers aren't public anyway, who really gives a toot? If it is absolutely necessary, can't they find a less performance affecting solution? Oh, wait. It's Microsoft.

Anyway. Yeah. Please just let my signs be.
