So I'm terraforming the nether, just covering all the nether rack and soul sand with stone and grass blocks and also making a town. Anyway after a while from initially starting I have a good sized area covered in grass that is also lit up, the next thing I know there's a chicken. I now have double the area covered and there are a bunch of chickens spawning naturally.
I just wanted to put this out there as I have not heard of this before.
I guess by putting all those grass blocks there, you met the spawning requirements for chickens. Nice! Now if only it could do that for other animals....

I am a mod on a few servers in Minecraft. If you see me in a server, be sure to say hi

Theoretically, it should allow the other passive mobs to spawn as well.
I conclude that chickens can naturally spawn on the obsidian portal blocks, so sometimes they end up in the nether through the portal.
This is based on the following observation. I made an giant overworld gold farm with 24 giant portals for pigmen to spawn in. They fall into water the fall to their deaths. Nothing from the overworld can get into this trap but I constantly get chickens in the trap anyway and I am at this moment watching a pig walk around inside it trap.
I can find no other explanation and assume that they are spawning right inside the portal.

Please actually read posts before responding, so you don't end up looking stewped.
Don't ask me how, I was exploring the Nether in survival and heard a chicken, about 30 seconds later I found a cavern and walked around and found where that chicken was, I picked up 2 feathers and cooked chicken... Don't ask how this happened, it just did, though an explanation would be great

Are you playing PC? This is Xbox so we don't have mega portals or mobs that can go through Nether portals. Chickens spawing in the Nether when no other Overworld mob can spawn sounds like an oversight in the code.

You could also probably do this with chicken eggs.
No duh, but they're probably not supposed to in The Nether and its only chickens.
If it IS a bug, I don't mind leaving it in.
No, that's on the PC. On the Xbox only players can travel through portals.
Did you even read the thread?

Retired StaffMe?! D=
But I wasn't there! I haven't even been to the nether since the update!
Wait... Does this involve some sort of prize? 'Cause I might have been there...
I modded in 3 mob spawners, made about a huge 50x50 area and nothing spawned.
