If you make you're house into a mountain, out of cobblestone, you can make a secret room into the mountain, with the door being cobblestone blocks, moved by sticky pistons. Place the button, or switch, in a room above, so that when someone presses it, it looks like nothing happens, they will then not know that the room exists.
One method that I typically use is to run two BUD switches into an AND gate which operates hidden piston doors. The switches are far enough away from each other that even if someone stumbled onto one switch, it's a royal pain to find the other one.
The friends that I play with are not the type to steal other people's stuff anyway. We just make all these secret storage spaces for the fun of it.
