I hide stuff behind a wall of lava, and behind that wall of lava is a button that activates pistons to shut off the lava and allow entry into the vault. But you need to know the location of the button to find it. It's well hidden.
My friends are both trustworthy and they know I'll steal their valuable stuff right back and if they try to hide it I'll simply blow their houses and structures up

I haven't tried this, but won't chests near lava be set on fire?

Lol, yeah, minecraft drama. My one friend was known for hiding stuff; once I went in his basement and started searching for a hidden chest/lever or something that would suggest secrecy. He had like a random small wall of lava, and I decided to keep hitting the trigger on it although you couldn't see anything but the lava. My suspicions were actually correct- he did in fact have a chest behind that lava wall- all of a sudden it brought me to the chest inventory. As a joke I took all the stuff in the chest (which were his valuables) and I left him a sign saying something along the lines of "You're trying to hide stuff? Well I caught you - Miff", something like that. (He wasn't in the game at the time, we were in a mutual friends world). Anyways, I told my one other friend about it, who was in the world with me and he thought it was funny.
Anyways, later that day I go back online and into the same friends world. The friend who owned the world was saying to me "Phil wants his stuff back", blah, blah, blah. I told him I'd give it back when he's online next, and my friend knew I would, I was just doing it as a friendly joke, of course I was going to return it. Anyways the next day I come on, and my house is torched, he ing burnt my whole house down. For like a week I interrogated him, saying why would you do that I have all your stuff, and he lied about it saying he didn't do it. The whole thing was ridiculous. Anyways, I returned all his stuff, which I had cleverly hid underground just near his house (I knew he felt guilty) and like a month later he finally admitted to burning it down, which I knew it was him. There was only like 4 of use who played in that world and no one else would have any reason to do that.
Anyways, sorry for the long post, it was just a funny minecraft story that I thought I'd share. I still bug him about burning it down, lol. It was just ridiculous because he was extremely dedicated to lying about not doing it, we argued for hours, basically just me accusing him and him lying. He even got one of his friends to try backing him up and saying that he wasn't on all day so he couldn't have, but I knew they were lying.
Yeah, on my worlds I only play with those I trust, and we share most everything. Everybody has a chest or two in their houses, usually near their beds that we put stuff we plan to use personally in that nobody bothers.
I like to make a chest in the middle of a large room surrounded by stone pressure plates with the entire ceiling and parts of the walls using sticky pistons with glass blocks holding back lava, as many obvious traps as possible. Run random redstone around. For me most people spend too long trying to figure out how to get past all the traps that they dont notice they arent even hooked up.

Haha, I love this one. My problem is that with most "vaults" there is always that weak ass iron door that is waaaaay to easy to break down. The lava thing is better, but most thieves know to look for that.

This is the easiest option for me. I could not remember the button on the wall behind lava and crap.
I label everything in German, if my friends can not read it then it should not be opened, plain and simple. They touch my stuff, their stuff gets destroyed. I only play with a few certain folks, we tend to all keep our own stuff as it is so we do not really worry.
I have done lots of different things. I have simply hid it under blocks, in secret rooms (not the picture kind,) behind a 9-button combo lock, under lava, out in the open, and in the ceiling of the Nether.
I have not, however, used a bedrock vault because I think bedrock is ugly and it's not doable in survival. I do play creative, it's just that I don't like bedrock.

In my personal world I just place it in an in unused corner where I expect no one to ever go. If I happen to see someone in that area I kick or take whatever measure are necessary. I've even used the excuse "don't mine that mountain, I have plans for it.".
I look at my map often so it really helps.
When I am in another persons world and don't know who will be playing I move my valuable chest often.
I keep one chest with my best stuff and just bury it somewhere deep out in a random hole and mark the co-ordnance. If I start to feel uncomfortable about it then I will just move it.
I have yet to have any problems but it isn't fool proof.

I either hide chests in the landscape, i.e. behind waterfalls, inside trees, or make obsidian vaults to house chests.
However, I still have not figured out a reliable system of restricting entry to obsidian vaults.
Good idea! I might have to try that on my own world!

Umm, how does this work? Care to elaborate?
