I tend to find animals in swamp biomes, and even then, usually after I have spent a number of hours on the seed. On my most recentxt seed, I've found a swamp biome near a large desert biome to have consistently spawning animals.
I managed to find some melon seeds, and planting 2 rows of 40 seeds makes enough so that I don't need anything else. I don't see why people don't farm melons, sure they only restore 1 shank a piece, but if you don't regen health after 2.5 are gone why not just eat 2 pieces of melon instead of bread? /:
I have a wheat farm as well, so I basically have no need for meat.
I was able to fence in a pig. From there I built a large fence around the area with multiple gates. I then was able to get a chicken in there and with eggs, got 3 more chickens. Then I found a cow close by and was able to smack into my fenced area. After I was done with capturing my animals, I went out searching for more animals close by. But the wolves have genicided(sic) all animals in the near proximity.
Its pretty funny watching a herd of wolves gather outside my animal farm. Now there are usually 6-7 wolves just chilling by my animal farm, but they aint getting in!! lol
So I have my animal farm all set for when they give us breeding. Can't wait!

My 5x5 wheat farm is also doing well, I have several stacks of bread saved up.
I haven't butchered any animals, I'm saving them for when breeding kicks in.
I had added to my flock when animals swam to shore and I could lure them in through a hole in the fence.
I also got some extra meat by killing animals outside my fence in the water. Doesn't hurt my farm, and they seem to keep spawning back OK.
I have NOT cleared off the tall grass on my ranch. it was my understanding that tall grass attracted animal spawns in prior versions.
