Ok, so I'm gonna be starting a new world soon, got bored of my last one. I'm thinking about turning structures off, for a few reasons:
1: As of our current update, they don't give you anything rewarding. (Oooh, melon seeds you say? . .Creative)
2: Because of the terrain generator, some structures are in really stupid places.
3: I've seen more passive mobs with the structures turned off. . . yeah, I know, coincidence.
4: Never found a stronghold, yet. . but from what I've heard about them, I'll just build one myself and pretend to find it.
5: The huge 'chasms' really annoy me. Are these classed as a structure? (Ravines maybe? Cause I heard ravines were just water flowing to bedrock, not a grand canyon knock off?)
6: I get lost in mineshafts
7: It messes up my slime farm when I'm clearing a huge space out, have the last bit to dig away, and it opens up into a mineshaft, then I have to dig my farm elsewhere.
What do you think? Do you like the structures? Do you turn them off or wish that the terrain generator hadn't been 'upgraded'? What annoys you most about them?
Ravines don't count as a structure and they're actually very useful. They are great places to build and are easy sources of materials. Coal, Iron, Gold, Lapis, Diamond, Redstone. They can all be found in Ravines.
Villages, Strongholds, Dungeons, and Abandoned Mine Shafts are what will be turned off.

Ahh, I heard that ravines WERE a structure. . . . they weren't in it before the update though, unless I just didn't find one. lol
You can find all the ores etc just by digging though. Plus, I find that with these canyons, or ravines, you still have to dig to find diamonds as there arn't many on the 'surface'. In the old version, there were plenty of surface diamonds. Take a look at the seed 'worstseedever' for example. . 30+ surface diamonds.
I just find them a bit annoying. It'd be nice if we could turn them off.
And another note, Lapis. . . what's the point of them? Don't think I've ever used them.

Surface diamonds were a glitch. Diamonds are only supposed to spawn in the bottom 17 or so layers of the world. I've found them easily just sitting in the walls and floors of Ravines.
AS for Lapis, it makes a nice decorative blue block. It's also used to make Blue Wool as the drop from mining it is the blue dye.

Sorry, when I said 'surface diamonds', I meant the ones on the 'surface' in the caves that are dotted about. (botten layers).
I know that lapis can be used to make a dye, but I don't see why it should be all the way down in the depths. I mean, cactus makes a dye, so does squid ink, but they're not as hard to find as lapis.
I did/do like the old terrain better than the new stuff. Before the update even happened, I sort of knew that I wouldn't enjoy the degree to which the land is now cut up by ravines. The one stronghold I've found so far was rather disappointing - Lots of floating iron doors and no library. The library was probably burned up by spawning near lava since the only evidence of wood I found was near a lava area and the iron doors left hanging over two huge ravines that cut through the stronghold. I also only found 1 chest. I have found a couple of expansive mineshafts with several chests scattered through them.
Although I'm finding the villages somewhat less inspiring than I first thought they might be, I'm reluctant to turn them off, since a lack of sheep early on in some worlds (probably due to a lot of wolves spawning near the player's spawn point) has caused me to have to raid the village lamps just to get enough wool together to make a bed just to eventually reset my spawn point to a location near/at my base.
I always thought "turning off structures" meant that you don't allow any "built" or "man-made" objects in the world when you create it, like villages, strongholds, etc.
That wouldn't effect objects made from terrain, like mountains, ravines, etc.
They'll polish up the terrain generation in time. Patience.
Turn off stucture and cover ravines that open to the surface. Then no more mineshafts, villages, or strongholds and you can pretend there are no ravines.
Since you are using creative for your melon seeds anyway, covering the ravine won't be an issue.
Problem solved. Until future updates.
I actually like the structures... I just don't like ravines. They sometimes cut away precious ores and such... When an ore spawns i bet you when a ravine spawns to cut at it some of that ore disappears.... what's left will be along the walls. Also as many have noted, it cuts strongholds in half, essentially making less of a stronghold to explore. Although they are pretty big.
Cutting a mineshaft in half is actually no biggy since they pulled forward the bridging effect apparently that the mineshaft creates over ravines or open spaces. That is if it is not burnt away by lava...><
Building a stronghold at that depth just doesn't make sense anyway. I also thought that option would turn ravines off as well..O_o guess I was wrong. Of course I never tested that theory..
Basically what this would confirm is having the structures on is what i like... and just that one feature i am not fond of.... I also don't like the endless cave routine either... too much cave means no branch mining... Due to you would break into another cave every 5 blocks it seems...>< Really think some of the terrain generation features should be toned down a bit, since on a small map that could make for a lot of clutter.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.

I'd only use creative to give me like 1 melon seed. I'd feel like I'm cheating myself giving more. If I cover the ravine, it's still gonna be there under the surface, which ruins any large scale mining. (I think you should be able to turn them off tbh)
Generated structures are the only way to get Circled Stone Bricks or Moss Stone. But what ddo you need them for?
And you can find Discs in Dungeons or Diamonds in Temples or Pyramides. But you can go mining and kill a creeper with a skeleton (then he dropps a disc!)
Or you make a mob farm around a spawner. But you can mine ores, go fishing, or fight mobs like REAL men do
But Strongholds generate even with structures off.
EDIT:
You can get Bottles o' Enchanting and Chain Armor from tradeing with villagers. Thats the only way to get them in survival without cheatig.
Are you sure you're talking about the XBLA version, and not the PC version?

Indeed, patience is needed.
