Hi Guys,
I have looked and used the search engine to look for answers for this. But I have not had any luck.
first, I have WATCHED EVERY video and looked all over t he forum for how to build a mushroom farm. I have done what friends of mine have done that have worked out for them and I have NO LUCK AT ALL!
The first one was above ground in a totally enclosed building with no light and the floor made of dirt with one mushroom in the middle of thee 6 x 6 x 4 room. The i used smooth stone for the floor, then Netherrack. hAd it up for three days in both peaceful, easy and up to hard in Survival. NOTHING
Then I put it under ground. Same thing, All different sizes of rooms, floor material and varying amounts of Mushrooms planted on the floor. Also changing from Peaceful and up to hard. STILL NOTHING.
I know that I have no light because I have had Endermen Spawn and Creepers as well.
I have also created a new world and still the same problem.
I watched a video of a guy putting the mushroom under where he wants it to grow. Not sure if that's how it works or not.
I will try that as well! ANY suggestions I will try! I really want to build an under ground strong hold and would love to stay in survival mode all the time and not have to travel long distances to find Mushrooms!.
Mushroom spread got tweaked in 1.8(Don't know exactly how, but they stop spreading endlessly as far as I know). The best method now is to grow them into giant mushrooms, and mining the blocks they're made of. It actually gives you a lot within minutes rather than waiting for them to spread.

IDK WHAT I'M DOING WRONG... Please help!
well now that 1.8.2 is out the best way to get mushrooms is by bonemealing them
I've had the same problem as well. Sucks. I'll have to try the bonemeal trick as well and see what happens. Just haven't found a lot of red mushrooms around on my land.....brown are plentiful. I'm sure there are plenty in the Nether.
I've found that mushroooms seem to like to spread a little faster to blocks going downward so I make stairlike structures out of dirt in my mushroom farms. The room doesn't have to be completely dark (and not really all that dark either). It just has to be below a level 11, so I usually have light coming in from around the back side of a partial wall. I do think this update has also slowed their spawn rates down a bit, but I have managed to grow a few the old way since the update. Apparently, you also now can't get more than 5 to grow in a 9 x 9 x 3 area.
I find that trying to have them spread naturally now is pointless.
Find yourself a good 10 high room underground or an open space above ground and bonemeal two mushrooms of each kind, you will get an average or 10-15 shrooms from one giant one.
So basically, in an 81 block area, you can have no more than 10 mushrooms?(5 of each). 9wx9l=81 total, ignoring the 3high, which could bring it to 243 total blocks.
And I don't see anything, does shrooms grow better on dirt? Or does it still not matter? I'll take out all but 2 mushrooms from my farm and see what happens. Makes sense why they aren't growing, I have too many. Maybe I'll turn my mushroom farm into a sugar cane farm or something.
plant mushroom > bonemeal to mushroom > destroy new mushroom. Farm. use it while you can, we should be getting giant mushroom blocks in the next update.
In one world the mushrooms on dirt in a 6 x6 3 room, after I removed all but one in the middle have spawned (brown) three mushrooms. The one with the Netherrack floor, removed all but one in the middle (red) spawned two.
But the areas that I harvested the original mushrooms from, the brown on a beach under a tree, has spawned about 15+! The cave area where I harvested the red has spawned over 20 +... MAybe the little buggers don't like to be replanted? IDK. but slow progress. In my other world I just did the bonemeaal and mushroom trick.
My mushroom farms are working, but it takes more than three days to fill them. I just ignore them for long periods, just checking occasionally to see the progress.
I would agree they seem nerfed since the patch. But it hasn't been long enough for me to say positively based on experience.
I put my farms in areas I will spend a lot of time working in. For instance, under my redstone/piston experiment area. I can spend days in that area building and rebuilding various experiments, so the farm is always in memory and updating. Farms on the other side of the map don't seem to progress in that time.
I also never entirely clear a mushroom field when I find it, I just take five or ten, just thinning them out. I haven't found a mushroom area on my 1.8 map like the ones I found pre-1.8 (huge cave areas covered in mushrooms). I don't know if my seed doesn't have them, if they can't exist post-1.8, or what.
A way of getting good structure for your mushroom farm is something like this.
first off make a gravity based switch and piston set up blocking the water from pooring out a channel. After that what you do is keep a couple of channels raised as mushroom spawns (these are shown as red mushrooms on cobblestone) that will never be washed away.
near the bottom what you do is cut down one or two blocks (shown as smooth stone) to create a trap to let the mushrooms wash in on. This is so when you totally seal the box up you will have no light showing in and monsters will not be able to get out.
Whatever you do, please dont have any open faces directly out in the open, because daylight does stunt the growth of your mushrooms.
On another note I have also made a Magic Mushroom box, so I can easly make big mushrooms to cut down also. Very cheap to make and you can get a ton f mushrroms that way also. The only reason why im doing another mushrrom farm in my new world is so that I dont waste all my bonemeal on mushrroms.
Like the others said...giant mushrooms. I had a mushroom farm before the update but abandoned it when I saw giants. 1 mushroom and 1 bone meal and you'll never run out of mushrooms again!

Into your life it will creep. It starts when you're always afraid. You step outside, the creeper comes and blows you away.
I have a reasonably large room cleared below my main base - maybe 30x40 blocks x 2 blocks high. I knocked blocks out of the ceiling every 4 blocks or so and planted torches, to give enough lighting that no mobs spawn. Planted mushrooms every 5-6 blocks randomly.
For the first few days, I got very little growth. Lately however, the growth has increased. I get about 10-20 new mushrooms every time I check in, which may be a few day/night cycles. I always leave a well spread out assortment of "seed" mushrooms when I harvest, similar to what I began with. Not as fast as before 1.8, but it's not useless either. I didn't expect it, but I'm thinking the farm may take a little while before it starts producing. It does seem to help that the farm is near where I hang out when not caving.
On another note, giant mushrooms survive daylight! Did not expect that. I planted some randomly outside during a night cycle, and now it's fun to watch skeletons spawn on the tops and wander back and forth. They don't seem to want to jump down. Planted a small mushroom under each giant, and I get a few new ones from that once in a while - mostly under the brown mushroom, even though the red seems to provide more shade.
Since bread now stacks, I haven't had a need for mushroom stew yet. My rooftop wheat farm produces all the food I need. I think I'm going to let the mushroom farm sit, and see exactly how much it will fill up before it stops growing new shrooms.
On another note, giant mushrooms survive daylight! Did not expect that.
I was wondering about that, then figured they did since I had seen pics of them in daylight. I'm thinking I'm just going to do the bonemeal trick, seemed to work well last night.
Question....do the brown mushrooms seem to spread faster than red? I did have a brown multiply last night after I took out all but 1 red and 1 brown. And there are brown mushrooms all over the swamp areas....I only found a few reds in my journey(and no, haven't been to the nether where they are probably plentiful.

I guess I will try that as well and do it during the day and make boat load of soup....
