I've seen this before. There was a huge 'drop', or ravine on the map I was playing, which was open to the sky and about 200 blocks long. The water dropping into the ravine was coming from the ocean. There were about 3-4 squid floating around in about half a block deep of water. Was quite funny to see.

One day I walked out and there was a squid floating in the air about 7 - 10 blocks up.
