Players spawn within an approximate area of about 30 blocks. However, if you build a room, I don't think they will spawn inside it. They are more likely to spawn on the roof. As the person above me mentioned, unchecking the "trust players" toggle is a much more reliable option, then they won't be able to mine or place anything until you authorize them to do so.
All players spawn in the same location you spawn in before sleeping in a bed.
Now if your really wanting to prevent people from griefing and shizzle wizzle.. Then simply turn Trust Players off..
Shame on me, but the griefer was a trusted player. He is the son of one of my regular Crafting buddies. He has always been helpful. He brought a friend in and I guess when two 12 year old boys get together, they act like animals.
I have no evidence it was him, except that I only allowed to trust him and his other buddy (and two of my adult friends).
But what I'm really wanting to do is make a waiting room where I can hold these filthy beings at bay. And then drop them into the void when Im feeling evil.

Thanks for this info UpUp. I am aware of the settings. You guys are all Cap't Obvious =p

I just thought of an awsome idea. Make a large container of lava above the spawn room. (Make sure the spawn doesn't have a roof.) Put pistons all along the bottom of the lava container. Then rig it all up with redstone so that when you pull a lever the lava gets dumped into the spawn room and engulfs anyone in there. Problem solved.

Sorry for sounding obvious... the weakest part of any anti-griefing system, of course, is that it's always someone you feel obligated to trust that gets you when your back is turned, isn't it? Being obvious again... autosave off and backup.

Probably won't work - the game prevents a player from placing water or lava anywhere within that 30 block buffer zone around the spawn area.

This is kind of my line of thinking, just wanted to work out if something like this is do-able. I love getting ideas while at work, they carry me thru the day then I get to try em out at home....

Yeah, its funny how nice people get pushed into having to be strict regulators. Such is life. I do have autosave off.
And of course it was a temple I built way out in the middle of nowhere, so I didnt know it had happened. I flew out to it on creative mode and sat there for 2 minutes thinking the chunks werent loading LOL then I realized "IT finally happened! I've been griefed!"
I wish there was an achievement for it.... lolBut couldnt I have the lava falling from higher than 30 blocks?
Sorry I dont know about this stuff, such is the reason I posted. Just wondering if its doable. Nether portal is not a bad idea. I could then do something ridiculous in the Nether.

Love the achievement idea!
I think that 30 block lava/water prevention zone extends vertically from bedrock to sky limit, It was put in to prevent people from messing up their spawn area and accidentally making their world un-enterable by anyone, even themselves. The Nether Portal idea is a great one; but I'm not sure the game would actually spawn anyone inside the portal. Just like with a room, it would probably spawn people on top of it or beside it somewhere else within that 30 block zone. I wonder if you dug out everything down to bedrock inside that 30-block zone (big skylight). It might have to spawn people on the bedrock then?
Nice, this is a good start. If they could somehow spawn in an area with high walls that couldnt be climbed or mined, and the only thing in the space was a nether portal, they would have no choice but to: 1) leave my world --2) sit and wait or ----3) Jump into the Nether portal.
It wouldn't have to have a ceiling. maybe turn it into something like the Roman Coliseum.....
I can't find it atm, but I watched a video that BHL put out a while back that had players spawning in an obsidian room without a ceiling that was I believe three or four high and looked to be about 20x20. The host would give the person who entered the amount of glass blocks needed to exit so that they couldn't break and leave them in the spawning area for someone else.
Do NEW players spawn in the same precise location?
Could I build a waiting room at that spawn that was impenetrable (obsidian?)
This room will be rigged so that I can ........ dispose...... of the player inside.
Sorry if this is repost.
