I'll start by saying that I've never played Minecraft PC, so this may not be news to anyone.
I just created a Nether portal in my new world after the update. After getting transported, I spawned in a fairly dark area with no light, so I began placing torches. I quickly discovered that I was in a room of Netherrack. I mined for a bit in several different directions, and I finally found a small hole in the wall that lead to a passageway. I walked around it, killed several Pigmen, and lit the place up. I found a vein of Glowstone sitting on the ground.
After a few minutes, I realized I had lit the whole place up, not just a section. It was as if I was trapped in this box of Netherrack. To test this, I mined in a straight direction and did the "bobble glitch" that lets me see caves as if I was underground (seen in low quality). I discovered that there were sections of Glowstone that I could see, as well as a big ghast. I mined in that direction, found the cave, and proceeded as I normally would if I was underground.
My question is, has this happened before? It's as if the entire Nether is filled with Netherrack, except for small saves. It's practically the same set-up as above-ground, with stone making up most of the world and small caves scattered here and there.
Sidenote: It makes getting to and mining Glowstone very easy, and I don't have to worry about getting sniped by a ghast
Hmmm... That's very interesting. It definitely hasn't happened to me before, but I don't venture to the nether very often.
My main issue is you just tried to close embedding a link into text with a close-italics tag.
Hey, shuddup!
Yea, I've watched enough videos and been to the Nether enough to know that it should probably look like a giant cave with lava falls, etc. But this world has a Nether that's straight up full of Netherrack with small caves here and there.

yes this happens its what most people call *bleep* nether generation
Almost sounds like you are in the roof of the nether.... I know it prolly not the same but i have once been ported to the roof where there really wasn't much in all directions but down.... And some have had to dig up to get to the surface....
Anyway, since your glowstone is on the ground that is about all I can assume. I know on mine i was in the upper levels per say. mined all the glowstone and well had to venture even further out for it... which lead to digging a staircase downward. However this one I could actually see eventually that i was near the roof of the world...><

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
I don't think it's a glitch with the nether. Your portal is probably just located near the top of the nether and inside an area where there happens to be a large amount of netherack and small caves. Start digging a down stair case; and you'll probably break through at some point with big lava lake below you. Another thing you can try is creating a different portal (a long, long ways away from the first) and see where it spawns. (With any luck, you'll find yourself floating in mid-air above the lava lake... bring lots and lots of gravel and cobblestone. )
Yeah that happened to me, I was in the roof of the nether and it looks very similar to what you're describing. I came out in a small room with enough room for 7 or so zombie pigmen. Then I mined upwards because I thought I was underground, hit bedrock and was thoroughly confused. Mined downwards and got into the main area of the nether, although it wasn't a big open cave with lava pools.
