How do you keep your chickens from escaping your farm? I a have a small farm with about 8 chickens in it and they all congregate at the gate. I can't open the gate without being mobbed by them trying to push their way out. they literally will not move away from the gate to let me in.
I fenced in an entire island with animals on it, rather than trying to herd the animals into a small pen.
I also would pop a hole in the fence to let an animal in from outside, if it was right there and no other animals were near. That usually worked and increased my herd.
Thus in pre 1.8, I always had a large enough space for animals to spawn in onto my ranch. And post 1.8, the animals I have don't clog up my yard.
for electricblooz, try installing gates on the other sides of the pen. This should spread their attraction to your main gate.
Also, build a lock-system so that you can ensure there is always a closed gate between the pen and you trying to leave the pen. This is the kind of thing used in real stockyards for moving cattle. Kind of like an air-lock, for cows.
At this point, I have 4 of each animal. Once breeding kicks in, I can test how fast they replicate, and butcher off any excess.
Generally though, my 5x5 wheat farm keeps me fed just fine.
