Today, I went to the nether to get some glowstone and netherack. Then I noticed Zombie Pigmen still drop their cooked pork Instead of rotten flesh. This is going to help me alot because chicken is the only meat you could farm. Excluding zombie meat. So anyways Im not sure if anyone really cares but this is a hell of a lot better than melons.
While that zombie pigmen certainly are a good source of food at the moment, mushroom stew is a good source of food as well. Besides of the fact that mushroom stew restores 4 hunger and has a high food saturation level, you can also make a makeshift shelter out of a mushroom and some bonemeal.

Agreed. Only problem I have with using mushroom stew is the fact that it still doesn't stack. Making it a huge space waster.
All the components for Mushroom Stew stack, and since you don't need a table to make it anymore, just carry 3 stacks, 1 each mush and 1 for bowl, and you end up with essentially a stack of 64, in 3 different piles.

And you dont even need more than 1 bowl, since it is reusable.
I used to use mushroom stew, but in all honesty, bread works just fine. I just harvested the wheat in the NPC village and I now I have enough bread to let me sprint from one side of the world to the other. No point in using chickens unless you just enjoy farming them.
And I do haha, though I have yet to catch a chicken. besides, who doesnt want cakes to decorate their house? I enjoy farming everything though I have yet to catch everything
EDIT: though, bread is the easiest and fastest to farm. have a big enough plot, fenced in, and boom, lotsa food

Watermelon is actually a lot faster and easier to farm than wheat for Bread. The only difficulty is finding melon seeds. After that though, it's probably the best food in the game.
It doesn't need to be replanted after the first time, and each melon drops 3-7 slices a piece. Within the first 5 minutes of having a melon farm, you can have at least 2-3 stacks of melon slices.
I've honestly never found melon of pumkin seeds, so...plus then if you have never farmed them before, you have to learn how to farm them. so early in the game? wheat, easy. especially if youve found an npc village with a farm already, just add onto it add a fence, and boom. plus the addition of a fence gate makes it even nicer.

Wheat/Bread is a good world starter food, but in the long run, Melons seem to be better. They grow a lot faster than wheat and give more in return.
I finally found an abandoned mineshaft and it had pumpkin and melon seeds. I was pretty stoked since melon farming is so much easier than wheat farming.
I think that chickens are pretty good since you can always just spawn more. On a similar note, did anyone know that you can spawn 4 chickens with 1 egg?

Yes, although it's extremely rare. 1:256 probability, according to the Wiki.
I personally put faith in melons! Started out with wheat/bread but now melons are totally the way to go. If you want out my youtube channel for my farm set up! Just search for Steelwerk, Look for the video Lets play episode 9 the new stuff, it may give you a couple good ideas!
I went on an excursion to the nether yesterday, and I had a full set of diamond gear, and I got two stacks of 64 before I had to leave because I was worried I was gonna die. when those pigmen swarm, they really swarm! lol.

I need to give out more reputation. I'm not used to the system, but I see so many helpful posts. D: Sorry if I forget you!
Well, if you carry just melon slices, yes, it is wasteful. HOWEVER! if you have many many many melons, you can break them into melon slices, and then craft them into blocks again. this will waste some slices (one stack of melons weilds average 320 slices).
I decided to do the math, so here goes
1 stack of melons = (aproximatly) 320 food points.
1 stack of cooked porkchops = 256 food points.
1 stack of steak = 256 food points.
1 stack of chicken = 192
1 stack of fish = 160.
1 stack of bread = 160
1 stack of apples = 128.
1 stack of rotten flesh = 128 + 80% chance of getting food poisoning (can be overcome by having many rotten flesh)
1 stack of cake = 6
1 stack of cookies = 64
1 stack of mushroom soup = 256 food points (takes 3 inventory slots, however, can be crafted on the move, without consuming fuel, needing a furnace or crafting table)
so, my conclusion is that melons ARE the best food, and second is mushroom stew, and third is porkchops and steak.
mushroom stew get second because it doesnt consume fuel, and can be made and consumed on the go, and in swamp biomes, readily availiable. but on a plain food point veiw, all three tie for second.

You need to take the food saturation into account. While a stack of melon blocks may potentially restore 320 food points the hunger bars will go down mush faster than a stack of any meat. Also, for the melon blocks, you must place and destroy them to recover the melon slices, and that may not be possible and is certainly not convenient to an adventurer.
