All you are Lucky, I've only found 1 chest in a mineshaft so far... And explored most of it. There were two spawners but oh well.. haven't got melon seeds yet, and don't feel like giving myself them in creative as that is for other things in my opinion.
I did however get pumpkin seeds...:D Now to make sure i want to plant them where i want...

yep, i nearly fainted when i saw the bottom of an abandoned mineshaft while mining.
melon seeds can only be found in abandoned mineshafts. I found mine legit but if you are having trouble finding one you can build an x-ray machine. Just look it up on youtube.
