Personally, I'm not a fan of any currency system in Minecraft. I feel like people should find trades that both people are satisfied with rather than having a set currency.
For example, if I'd like some lapiz and have spare redstone, I should be able to trade that to someone who wants redstone because it would work as a mutual agreement.
With a set currency, such as sponge or enderpearl, I'd be limited to needing those items if I wanted to trade which is just unnecesary in Minecraft.
Our community has about 4 wealthy players and the rest aren't poor, they just aren't as wealthy. My friend I play with the most has over 600 worth of currency
I wouldn't use common ores or anything like that for a currency.
Not really. I've never even been a part of an RPG world. All I know is what I've heard from people about everyone becoming rich and the game turns boring. Like I said, inflation... lack thereof, actually. If you don't know how currency works, don't be surprised when your community collapses on itself within a month and nobody wants to play anymore. That's all I'm saying.
Why would someone go out of their way to institute some form of currency? This game can already work perfectly without it. You don't need to go through a bunch of extra hassle and regulation, making the game feel more like work than a nice way to relax at the end of the day. I just don't see the point, there's literally no reason behind it.
Say I was on the left side of my porch, and I wanted to be on the right side. Well, I could simply take a few steps and be done with it. Or I could follow the principles of currency in Minecraft. This would probably entail something like running around the house, building an obstacle course in the back yard, completing said course, running around the other side of the house, then finally reaching my destination.
It doesn't translate exactly, but... you get the point.
I see your point. I just think that a community thrives with a successful economic system. It also makes things more interesting. But if some players were to become so wealthy that it would hinder new players, then, yes, it would create problems.

At least you get some nice legs from all that running, eh?

That's why the government fines breaks up monopolies.
Ftfy.
Personally, I prefer a barter economy. However, currency can be useful for worlds where resources have become scarce and division of labor keeps some people mining and others building.
Although, why not have both? I can see a community transistioning from a barter economy to a currency-based economy by necessity.
There aren't necessarily only 8 people on a server. There could be 100 people associated with it, but only 8 went on at a time.
The point is, there's most likely only going to be one type of shop open at a time. In fact, sometimes it's the same shop, operated by multiple people. All I'm saying is their isn't much competition in the market when only 3 shops or so are open at any given time.
-snip in a nutshell, general idea of what your saying-
Cowboy you are right, In any group type situation communism works well and is clearly the correct way to go, especially in a setting of people on a deserted island, but when it comes to an RPG in minecraft it's a different story. Having the idea of being rich gives people more of an insentive of playing often an striving to be a working class citizen to show the noobies on the server of their success, where as communism in Minecraft, everyone is on one class level from the beginning and the end. Capitsalism is fodder to natural human greed, which in Minecraft, in a way is a good thing because it's not life or death, balls to the wall. it's a game.
So basically communism in minecraft gets boring. What are people working for? Getting 5 bread every hour, no matter how good or bad they did their job, they recieve just as much as their neighbor did,
Why would someone go out of their way to institute some form of currency?
What if some people like to over complicate things in Minecraft? Maybe some people don't like to simply hit blocks over and over and place them back down over and over? Capitalism in Minecraft adds more to the game than what we have on MCXB.
-capitalism would work so much better in this game if the max players is at least 16.
-Bartering is clearly a superior system overall, but again, refer to my first paragraph. Showing success.

I'm sure a well-organized server would have shops open at specific times. Not likely that one exists, though.

I'll enjoy talking politics with you, mate.
I guess you have a point. I know all about over complicating things in Minecraft. Like I said in a reply to someone else, currency can work in Minecraft, but the host has to understand how an economy works. In all the examples I've seen or heard about, this is how currency has worked in MCXBLA RPG worlds:
A host continues to irresponsibly produce money with absolutely no regard to inflation. Prices stay the same and eventually everyone is rich and can basically do whatever they want. In this situation, you might as well not have even had a currency in the first place. You might as well create a huge stockpile of resources, invite people to your world and say, "Okay, here's everything you'll ever need. Do whatever you want."
There are many different theories of Communism, and I don't think we're quite on the same page. In an anarcho-Communist society, everyone gets what they need, regardless of whether or not they are able to work. In Minecraft, everyone is able to work so that's not an issue. There is no government, (That's the anarchist part of this theory.) but their is a social hierarchy. Those who work harder and contribute more to the commune will have access to more luxuries. It's an ingenious system that encourages hard work for the benefit of everyone.
And it has worked well in Minecraft without becoming boring. There are quite a few servers and clans on MCPC that are completely based on Marxist Communism. Not too sure about anarcho-Communism, but I'm sure there are some servers out there for that as well.
I may have came off a bit hostile towards Capitalism, and I am when it comes to the real world. (I live in the U.S. so I'm currently watching the system fail horrendously.) But I do realize an economy can work in Minecraft. I guess my big issue is the way I've seen it done so far in MCXBLA, it just doesn't work at all and makes no sense.
(I live in the U.S. so I'm currently watching the system fail horrendously.)
It's not "failing horrendously", it's faltering a little bit, and we're working on fixing it. Just because we had a recession doesn't mean capitalism is going to die in a fire. I mean, it survived the Great Depression, didn't it? We'll be all right in the end.
Any server i have played on has used paper made from sugar cane only downside is having to collect all the naturally spawning sugar cane at the start.
Why would you use paper as a currency in minecraft? You're basically taking everything that is wrong with the world today and knowingly replicating it. You need to use something that cant be made, or else greedy people will dilute the market, cause inflation and eventually cause the economy to collapse in on it's self. Sound familiar? That's because it's happening right now in the world.

It's really not what's happening now. It's not that anyone can print money, it's for a myriad of other reasons.
Newsflash: There are real people behind the characters you're playing with online. Real people with real personalities, and some of them will take advantage of the system. A society is a society, it doesn't matter if it's in real life or a virtual reality. In fact, it's most likely to amplify thoughts of greed because everyone knows there are no real world consequences and it's far easier to exploit the system.
My suggestion is the abolishment of politics, something to make it easier for the host to moderate. If everyone supports everyone, there is no need for greed. Rewards for supporting the community are social, rather than material. Your status in the world is determined by how much you contribute to the wellbeing of everyone as a whole.
"From each according to his ability, to each according to his need."
It's the best way to build a strong community that's less likely to fall apart. If you haven't noticed, most RPG worlds on MCXBLA don't last more than a month. What do they all have in common? Currency. Think about it for a second, if there are a bunch of rich guys at the top with all of the money, that's going to discourage new players from joining in the first place. And if they do, it's probably not going to be fun working for scraps while the others have everything they could want.
You do realize communism fails because their has to be a leader or people that are above others. Yes the concept works but it can never actually be done without being the actual "Communist" idea. Of every one being the same, payed the same, other I can't remember, etc, and etc. But if it could be done with a few minor changes I think everyone should be all for it.
It's not "failing horrendously", it's faltering a little bit, and we're working on fixing it. Just because we had a recession doesn't mean capitalism is going to die in a fire. I mean, it survived the Great Depression, didn't it? We'll be all right in the end.
"Fail" is used very loosely these days. I'm just saying it's not working very well and a lot of people suffer because of it. I'm not talking about a full societal collapse here, but you have to admit it's on one hell of a decline.

There are leaders in a Communist society, it's called the government, but there is no one supreme leader. Marxism also supports true democracy, not the American excuse for a democracy, elections where only the votes of representatives count. I'm going to stop there because I'm getting off topic.
Anyway, I'm not even talking about Communism. This is anarcho-Communism, where there is no such thing as a government.
To say this best, I'm going to quote something from another thread.
Okay that sounds rather good, but what does this have to do with Minecraft?
In our clan and on our server, we try to apply the ideas of anarcho-communism to minecraft. That means that we do not have private property nor use money on our server or on any other server we play on. Instead we store our resources in a Communal Storage, so that everyone can use them. Because we don't have private property, all farms, mines and other necessities are public. So instead of having to build your farms and mines next to those of everyone else, resulting in the map being full of the same buildings, you can build great gardens, monuments, libraries, castles that everyone can then enjoy.
I dunno about you. But to me, it sounds like this system works great.
No economic or political theories are perfect, and never will be. I think we all can agree that this is much better than a dictatorship, like all of the MCXBLA worlds I've seen. By the way, there is no such thing as "being payed the same" in a Communist society, where currency doesn't exist. I'm pretty sure you're thinking of socialism.
