Dig 4 two block deep openings then 1 one block deep. Put Redstone dust on the one block deep, and on the two block deep one next to it. Go to the FIRST two block deep one you dug (opposite to the Redstone) and place two sticky pistions on its side facing you (next to the Redstone two blocks deep) on he THIRD two block deep one you dug. Then, place two TNT one the sickt pistions.

Lastly, face with your side to the TNT, and bring the Redstone dust to the block in front of you and place a level. Pull it and see the caves underneath you!
you dont need all that.. 1 tnt, 1 sticky piston, about 10 redstone and a lever are all you need. you also only have to dig down 2 blocks. All that needs to happen is the tnt needs to be pushed into your head.

i dont think its even been patched on PC yet, its a really useful glitch though. helps make sure you have mineshafts on your map before you get too far into it
Another easy, and fun way to find them is to take your seed to a fresh map. Enter it in creative mode and start laying tnt down to bedrock every 100 blocks or so. It shouldn't take you but an hour or so and you'll have found many mines and your stronghold. Yesterday I found my stronghold, 5 abandoned mineshafts, several ravines, and 3 monster spawners bringing my total of those to 8. Just write down the co-ords and return to your original map and have fun with your new goodies.
P.S. The x-ray glitch works still, i used it. However, i couldnt find the stronghold with it :/

i just like the lever since you can flip it on and off from in your hole

this is true, strongholds aren't nearly as noticeable as mineshafts via x-ray
