Me and my friends are trying to make a ranch of sorts but it's kind of hard herding the animals into their pastures. What we do is make long trenches to the pasture then we push the animals along it till they reach it, which is very difficult. Is there a better way to get the animals where I want them to go?

No other way
But you can
-Make a flatland not to big but kinda big so animals will spawn there.
-Punch animals into the gates
I fenced off a huge area that is my land where i build my farms, house, and other buildings, and over time i've had every animal type spawn into the game in my "yard." When a new animal shows up i quickly pen it with fences, then build a narrow channel using fences from the animal to my main animal sanctuary. Using this method I have a pen with 3 sheep, 1 cow, 1 pig, and dozens of chickens which i spawn using their eggs. I could have had a lot more pigs but i ate them.

My game as of late has been something like this:
Chickens, Pigs, Cows: O.o Oh no an axe murderer!
Me: C'MERE! >
And then dinner time.
