A torch close by is good enough to make them grow I believe but don't quote me on it.

On every map i have on both my online and offline profiles i have an underground farm for everything including a tree farm and they all grow from torches or glowstone blocks.
So no you have no need for any natural light and i have also noticed that they grow slightly faster in some cases cause there is always light.
I always found it fun to do underground farms once I found out torches were good enough to grow wheat and whatnot. I dunno about needing water underground, but my formula is just to make sure there is a water source as well as torches nearby the crops. Plus, I like to make mini-waterfalls that pour from the ceiling, haha. A central pool is usually reserved for sugarcane.

Do wheat?
Do pumpkin?
Do melons?
I was thinking of putting it in my attic. Can it be artificial light or does it have to be natural?
Not Wheat.
I had both these farms underground
No water either or bone meal
Well yes water for the sugar cane
