I have read through the first ten-ish pages of the forums and still can't find this. If i have completely explored the surface in a pre-update seed, does that prevent new things like strongholds and ravines from appearing underground? I get that the landforms can't/won't change (duh!) and the weather has changed (double duh!). I just want to know, since i haven't been below ground on a few maps, if the update possibly added things underground since that is really an unexplored area. And before anyone asks, no i haven't been onto all my old seeds yet. I wanted to back them up before i went onto the old ones, which i will do today when i get a go at the Xbox. Just putting the question out there. Thanks.

According to a tweet it is anything that has been generated on your map. Basicly places that you have been. So if you have places on your map you have not traveled to, there is a chance the new structures will generate there.
Don't listen to minecrafter. He is explaining it poorly.
Each chunk, or 16x16x256(all the way down to bedrock and all the way above in a small slice of land,) that generates is set forever. It doesn't matter if you haven't been underground, it is already generated and the damage is done. You have to go to a completely new area that you've never been to before, such as a jungle or an area outside of your map item. This guarantees generation of post-update land that is rich in new-y, update-y stuff. You'll get new land, albeit finding a stronghold at a very rare rate.
TL;DR: I will not offend your intelligence by putting one; you're a big boy internet user, so you should have the attention span to read the above paragraph. On the Xbox Version, though, you will have to generate a brand new world if you already generated the entire boundary of the map.
You're welcome.

I thought this might be the case. Sucks for the old maps, but i'm an explorer by nature so on to more new ones. Thank you.
Btw, who is "TL;DR"? ( <-- I'm really old, so, if that is internet lingo, just clue me in. I don't mind. )

TL;DR is a term for "Too Long, Didn't Read."
Don't worry, I've only recently learned of it too.
Most people are startled by walls of text, or even simple paragraphs, but I don't leave the option closed to others, so I keep TL;DR open until someone asks for a shorter explanation.
You're welcome. It's no problem, really.
