This update, no. Later on, you can throw them to teleport to different areas while taking some fall damage.

They are also later used in the crafting of the Eye of Ender which leads you to Strongholds when thrown.

Just save them until there is a use for them. Since they're an item/entitle, they'll update when the game does, even on old worlds.
