I've been using those little discolorations to keep track of village locations on my main survival map. My goal is to run roads to all of the villages we've found. We're up to five now and one is going to require building a bridge over a river! if 4x4 does make a pixel on the map then i may beef up my road sizes to 4 squares rather than the 3 that spawn in villages so that you can see the little roads running here and there on the map. Does this work with gravel too?

I'm not sure exactly what blocks show, but I can tell you some that don't. Gold and diamond won't, lapis shows, but as a gray color for some odd reason. Also, no colored wool blocks show on the map, and I just tested gravel... it doesn't show either. However, stone will show so that could be an alternative for you.
EDIT: Never mind, lapis doesn't show up as gray. I failed to realize there was stone underneath.
Is it just me or can you see your house on the map now? Sorry if its a noob question.
That's what I thought.
It probably just recognizes wood...

Retired StaffYup, I think it requires a 4 x 4 area to make one pixel on the map. Something like that anyway... But, it only works with certain blocks.
Some people have taken it to the extreme:
