It's been a while since I've posted on here but I'd just like to see how many people are being affected by the biome coding change in the latest update?
For those who might not remember, I was involved in discussion on here way back in July about the upcoming 1.8.2 biome changes and along with other members pointed out that the 1.8 update on the PC caused massive snow issues for some maps on the PC version, covering complete cities in snow etc.
I know that might not seem like a big deal, its just snow right? But it can aesthetically destroy months of work in somebodies game.
A friend of mine has unfortunately experienced this in his world after the latest update on XBLA, which is one of the best (if not the best) worlds on XBLA.
Not only has the snow covered his map aesthetically, but it has also crippled some of the most innovative and complex mecahnics you will see in the game (due to the new biome code freezing the water in some of his mechanisms, rendering their operation useless).
Some things are repariable, but a lot aren't, and aside from building a hideous looking glass atrium above the entire city or placing an obscene amount of torches or glowstone around the entire map (which would be as equally an eye-sore as the snow), there is nothing you can do about the snow accumulation...
I have not been able to play on my world long enough yet to tell if this snow dilemma will effect the world that I spent months on, but it likely will in some areas (albeit not as bad as my friend's), but if anyone else has experienced this on their world and has some solutions for fixing the dilemma, I would be most grateful if they could share them, so I can pass them on to my friend.
I know that the majority of responses to this will be simply "its just a game, get over it, start a new world & stop crying", but for some people they have dedicated a lot of time to designing and constructing their worlds, long before creative mode and their end result to them is akin to a piece of art to somebody else, and they don't take kindly to it forcibly being changed without having any say!
Quite simply Minecraft is a game we have purchased, and patches with poor development like this (especially since they had warning it would happen) can go a long way to putting customers off side...
An anology I would use, is imagine if somebody sold you a block of land, let you build your family home on it and then returned 6 months later to rip out your carpet, dismantle your kitchen and tear down your garage and walk away... Would you be happy about that?? No, because you PAID to be able to create those items and for them to be forcibly changed without your consent is not acceptable...
Yes I know that scenario is farrrrrrrr out of proportion to a game of Minecraft, but from a business stand point, it is the same principle. Not very nice 4J.
Anyway, I don't want to turn this thread into a rip on 4J, they have developed an amazing game, a game that I and many others love, but I just wish they would take more care with their updates, no matter how trivial this may seem to some people, this was a known issue on the PC version, it was pointed out to 4J well in advance, and they still did not prevent it... It's just simply frustrating...
Anyway, I would love to hear from people who have had similar experiences or who have solutions to the snow deluge appearing over previously lush and vibrant worlds, any help would be much appreciated...
Finally, to the mods, please don't delete this thread, I'm not here simply to try and rip on the game or cause controversy, I would just like to point out this should have been dealt with during the development of the patch and try and find any solutions if they are out there...
For reference, I'd like to post a screenshot of the PM I sent to 4JSteve back in July regarding this issue, along with his response that "old worlds shouldnt be affected"... I do thank Steve for replying to that PM though, I will admit he does listen to the community and answer our questions and I thank him for that .
Also, I have attached a video of my friend SPITFIRE's world, easily the best world I have seen and it is such a shame to see the biome coding affect it so drastically .
Please read my post, i put it up seemingly minutes before you, I'm being affected greatly. I'm relieved I'm not the only player who's being affected though. They will have to fix it, it's ridiclously unfair of them!!!!!
Please understand, there is no fix. Period. Full Stop.
Weather assigned to an area is part of the biome code. Mojang changed that code between PC 1.7 and PC 1.8 to accomodate upcoming feather such as jungles, etc. The biomes are like an array with a various code assigned to each chunk in your world. Those codes now have new meanings.
For instance, the code in 1.7 that meant "desert" in 1.8 means "frozen zone" (possible taiga?) That's why the block don't change, but the weather does.
Unfirtunately there is literally nothing that can be "done" without preventing MCXBLA from getting the later updates.
Poetic, something is really really weird in your picture. I see vines on your ship (which is in the middle of a frozen lake - that should not be possible unless you placed them.
Please people..look up what the updates do. I had anticipated this from day one. Espeicially since a rewrite of the biome coding was a HUGE feature of the 1.8.2 update on PC

Actually, 4JSteve said it shouldnt affect previously made worlds (check my PM exchange with him in the original post). And even if they said it would, the update is compulsory, its not optional, so explaining changes that are bad does not excuse them from happening to begin with.
They had months to work around this, and didn't - So people have every right to be annoyed that work they PAID to be able to put into the game has been foricbly changed without their consent.
The same as if you would be pretty annoyed if you paid for a car and 4 months later the person who sold it to you visited without your consent and ripped the leather interior out of it... Different scale but same principle.
Perhaps an option in a future update to turn the weather effects of biomes on and off?
Surely that couldn't be too hard to code?
Yeah, the command block in the PC patch's snapshot can stop rain. Not biome identity, or color of grass, but it can turn off weather continuously if you put it on a clock.
Only problem for you is that even the PC chaps don't have it yet.
The update is optional. Like on all games. You will be unable to play online with other people if you chose to forgo the update, but it IS NOT required. Anything that is not part of the procedural generation is retroactive for all old worlds. That is to say weather, potions, sprinting, etc.
As for your comparison with a car, there is a difference. The manufacturer, or seller of a car does not actively provide you free updates to it.

The only way it is not required is if you relinquish a feature of the game that you have paid for - Online multiplayer. If you want to keep playing the full game that you PAID for, then the update is required. Online multiplayer was the selling point for a lot of players, dare I say most.
