Well wolves spawn in foresty biomes.... They usually kill most the other things, primarily sheep.
Although the spawn rate should be about the same. However the way they spawn is different. It will not just be 1 wolf that spawns when they do spawn it will be usually a whole pack of them. Same with cows and sometimes sheep....
pigs i have notice a bit smaller amount.
Things just take longer to respawn, but they do eventually...

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Yeah, a lot of people are having the same problem. I was just able to capture a cow. Though It took about 2 hours of gameplay for the one cow to spawn.
found why there was no spawning. because of tall grass, i logged on my old world that had abselutely no tall grass, when i bone mealed there was no spawning
That at the moment due to lack of breeding, makes waiting for the animals to spawn back could take a while even hours in some instances. The respawn is quite low rate, so it will be a long wait regardless until they have breeding implimented. That update that brings it will make farming animals and cooping them into an area a whole lot easier, but for now chickens would be the only thing even feasible to farm.
This even would try my patience to some degree without that update to come. Anyway I hope things will turn out eventually...:D

Passive mobs don't despawn, so maybe there are some animals that you haven't found yet? I haven't had much problem with animal spawns though. After half an hour some cows spawned in the tutorial world for me(looking for the hidden chests).
