I'm pretty stoked with the new update (so much so I've decided to join the community here to talk about it!) and have generated a new world to tool around in. I found my first village and have decided to wall it in and perhaps expand it in preparation for any potential NPC updates. I've also discovered a ravine that looks impossible to get down.
I have a few questions:
1. What's the best way to keep mobs (especially creepers) out of a village area? I've lit the area up and placed cacti and some preliminary walls around the area, but some still get in. Should I put more light outside the walls to keep the spawning even further away?
2. Do we know anything about how NPC villagers will spawn in future updates? Is there an upcoming work thread? I may have missed it in the important threads post above, but I didn't see any. I'll admit to not hitting up 4J if that's where I should have gone.
3. For ravines, how do folks typically explore them? Ladders? Dig near them and then pop out along the walls? Waterfall elevators? Ravines seem dangerous!
4. I haven't seen any evidence of mineshafts or temples or strongholds. Are there obvious signs of them above ground or can you only spot them by exploring caves? Seems like folks on these boards are finding them superfast and I'm wondering if I'm missing some obvious indicators. I only play on survival mode, so that might be why I haven't located one....haven't even fully fleshed out the map yet.
5. Lastly, this update seems to have curbed sheep spawning...finding 3 wool to make a bed was crazy difficult. Is there a way to encourage friendly spawning or am I out of luck on this world (and will need to kill spiders to make more beds for my friends?) Cows seem to be be short supply as well, though I've spotted a few mountain-cows which crack me up. Seriously...a cow climbing a mountain? Hilarious.
Thanks! Would love to see what folks are doing with villages. My current one is just a small farming community, but I'm planning to add a few more buildings to flesh it out.
I'm not a minecraft guru, but I may have some suggestions to help you with your questions.
1. Enemy mobs will spawn where there is no, or low light. Make sure the village is well lit. Maybe even place fence posts as a barrier around your village. They can't get over a fence if there aren't any blocks right beside them that they could crawl over. That way you could tell if they're spawning inside your village somewhere.
2. I haven't played the Pc version so I know little about the Npc's that will be added later, you should checkout the minecraft wiki for more info on that.
3. For ravines I have been using gravel, dropping it off the top and using a shovel to destroy the pillar to make my way down. Most of the time there's a waterfall somewhere in the midst of the ravine that you could jump into. Then you can use ladder or make some stairs, to get out. I've been getting lucky and finding numerous tunnels that lead up and out of the ravine.
4. Explore those ravines! I found a stronghold right away when I explored tunnels in a ravine. If you see stone bricks or a door underground it's a good chance it's a stronghold or a mineshaft.
5. I've had the same problem with sheep, I end up killing them after I shear them, for they don't regrow wool in this update. On the other hand if you find a stronghold or a mineshaft, there's an extremely good chance you'll find plenty of spiders, and spider webs, for string.
Hope I helped at least a little. Have fun with the update.
There are no temples as of yet...>< Anyway finding a mineshaft is simple, not easy. Basically dig underground or explore lots of caverns/caves. As for the stronghold what the other person said makes a whole lot of sense, as if there is a door, then there has to be a stronghold there.
Mineshafts don't have doors, just rail tracks and supports. Well that and webs sometimes chests and cave spider spawner where webs gets thickest.
Ravines are a good place to search for either of those two since it could be chance to have an opening along it that leads to one.
Yeah animals will not despawn or regrow wool yet sadly, which turns the tables on me as well for wool farm or any farm of any kind really beyond chickens... and the usual in the default game. At least on my primary world. Think I'll hold off till they put in breeding for that one, if not craftable pumkin seeds...
I usually build my way down a dirt staircase, so i don't have to use tools... that is a lot of crouching and careful crosshair targetting to do that... as you can place up to i think 3 or 4 blocks away. something like that. I just utilize that distance to get down to the bottom if not make a bridge to the other side if needed to explore something over there that peeks my interest. I stink going up and down waterfalls so i crouch and go slowly when transversing ravines.. Kinda like how i do cave exploration, you never know when there might be a 1x1 hole in the ground that drops you down like 20 blocks.
Ladders are good when going down and placing as well. It just takes the use of crouching to another degree, but i would make sure you have enough ladders to do something like that more or less attempting that. Trust me it is not easy, just simple...lol
NPC's the villigers prolly won't be in for a while but really they do nothing in 1.2.3 that would be the next update to come. They spawn and wander off around their village and sometimes the zombies eat them alive. Well you would think anyway. The die like us, however we are smarter than to walk off a drop into a cave though.. or wander too far in darkness...><
That is about all I can say about them, and all i can think of at the moment.:D

I thought they had to eat grass to regrow wool?
Okay. I hadn't considered using gravel to get down. That's smart! Create a pillar, then drop down and build a ladder up. Nice tip!
