Me and my friends started a new world today and we haven't found any animals yet. We've even cleared out alot of the tall grass and still no animals, Is this a glitch where we have to remake the world or do we just have to keep exploring till they spawn in abundance?
I'm playing in the world with Unforgiven118 and we haven't seen a single wolf or any other passive mob. I've saved and reloaded the world multiple times, still nothing. Is this a common glitch in 1.8 because I or any of my friends on the server have never experienced a shortage of livestock.

I found a little of everything this morning when I was playing for a little bit....killed 3 sheep for wool, killed 2 cows for 6 steaks, and a pig for a porkchop. A couple chickens running around too. And that was not too far walk from my spawn. May be hit or miss, I just got lucky.
Plenty of animals on my world. When mobs spawn there's always 5-8 types of each mob within viewing distance. Had 6 wolves spawn 20 minutes into the game
I have been dealing with this same problem all day and I think I have it figured out. In each case it was a world that i created in survival mode on peaceful. I would explore around a bit and if I decided I liked it i would exit without save and re-enter in normal. At this point on any new map there would be very little or no passive mobs at all. sometimes all dogs. somtimes all pigs. never sheep or chickens. I spent two hours walking around one map I liked and never saw anything but dogs. Unfortunately the only solution I have found is to delete the map, remake it and save before exiting the game. Maybe just dumb luck but it seems to be reliably fixing it.
edit: I have also noticed that sometimes when I exit without save and rejoin it puts me in a totaly different spawn point. the bonus chest is still there but it has different items and no torches on the outside
I think we figured out the problem. We had a TON of tall grass. When we cleaned alot of it up, animals started to spawn for us.
That is good to know. I have not seen a single sheep all day. I did run into a pack of 7 wolves earlier. But yeah my map is just spammed with tall grass, time to get to work cutting it down!
I had this exact problem as well. There were some pigs and sheep in my spawn, but I explored the entire rest of the map and found nothing but packs and packs of wolves. I guess I better mow the lawn and see if that works.
EDIT: Ok... ... Who else has a map that literally 98% of the ground is COVERED in long grass?

Our world. It feels like its 75% covered in tall grass. -_-. At least with 4 people on our server, cleaning up is kinda easy. If you want a little help, put a bucket of water on the ground, it'll wash away some of the tall grass.
Do hostile mob spawns affect passive mob spawns? I only ask because the world under our feet seems to have become swiss cheese with this update. I can't find a hole that doesn't lead to a cave, that doesn't lead to another hole with a cave in it, y'know? I'm wondering if too many hostiles under ground are messing with passive spawns above it. I'm probly wrong tho, cuz I think it's two seperate systems for spawing passives and hostiles.

I honestly have no idea, hostile mobs were spawning perfectly fine at night though.
I'm having the same issue. I would create a world (always survival) and see passive mobs around and pull out the map to see how much water is around and gauge whether or not I want to use the world depeding on the surrounding biomes. Sometimes I don't and create a new world and end up using that one only to find there are about 98% wolves in tiagas and forests with maybe 2% being a rare lone sheep or cow. Plains and mountain biomes are comepletely devoid of life. Other than the hostile kind, of course. Same for all difficulties. I haven't even touched creative yet and I deleted all of my old pre 1.8 worlds weeks ago. I do believe this was also an issue present at the initial beta 1.8 release on the PC version, as well.

You could try killing the wolves to see if that helps also. After cleaning alot of our tall grass, we found a pack of 18 wolves and killed them all.
I killed a few animals yesterday & today. Now, they do not seem to be spawning again. It's a pity. I was right in the middle of trapping one of each animal for display purposes. Grrr.
I began my old world last night and saw a bunch of pigs, sheep, some cows and chickens spawn right away and thought, "this isn't so bad." Little did I know, that a pack of wolves also spawned nearby. Soon, all sheep were dead and I haven't seen one since. I killed the wolves to save my pigs, but they respawned minutes later so I had to pen up all remaining animals. Now I just have wolves roaming around, no sheep and no animals outside of those I managed to capture.
It is very odd wandering around an animal-less landscape. It feels lonely.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
I've started about a dozen new worlds since the update and played on each for at least half an hour (was up almost all night), and animals really are ridiculously rare now. Most of the time I wasn't able to get ahold of three wool for a bed during the first day because I didn't find enough sheep. Even when I had found some iron ore and crafted sheers, I still sometimes didn't find any sheep at all, or the one sole sheep I happened to stumble upon didn't drop enough wool.
It's the same with other animals as well, although not as severe - a few times I found small groups of three to four cows, chickens, or pigs. Yet when I found a group of one kind of animal, I never found a group of another kind. In the best case I found single animals, if at all. However, wolves appear to spawn far more often and in larger numbers. I've stumbled upon groups of 3+ wolves rather often.
Also, I've never found even only a single animal in the new swamp biome. At least I think that those areas with vines on the trees and trees in the water are swamps. Wolves did appear there a few times, but no other kind of animal. And for some reason, swamps seem to be the predominant biome on all my worlds now, along with deserts.
I understand that animals have to spawn far less frequently now than they did before since they don't despawn any more. But aside from the fact that, as example, it's now easier and faster to craft an iron armor instead of a leather armor, the worlds also are liveless, empty, and rather boring without animals populating them.
Please, 4J, increase the spawn rate of animals at least to halfway between was it is now and what it was previously. At least until the update where we can lure animals and breed them. Please!

I bet thats my problem. I have tons and tons of tall grass, sand and water on my map. I guess its time to clear some tall grass.
