As most people are doing, I plan on creating a new map once the update comes. I plan on building the most epic of bases but I need some ideas. At first, I planned on making a huge 201 block diameter floating island with smaller islands orbiting around the main island. I plan on building a minecart train station that takes you to the different small islands.
My questions are on how I should implement this? Should I make the floating islands more naturalistic with trees everywhere and simplistic tree houses? Futuristic glass domes surrounding thhe floating islands with complicated redstone devices? How many smaller floating islands orbit around the main island? Does each small island specialize in a certain task such as a huge watermelon farm on one island and the other one has a huge wheat farm. Perhaps make each island biome based? One island represent a jungle biome, another a desert biome, etc.
My biggest question is how should one reach the floating islands from the ground without the use of flying or time consuming methods such as a ladder?
Well for the actual question maybe a couple set of strategically placed nether portals....
I actually like the idea of each island being used for a specific purpose, as that is kinda what i do while i continue to build my own kingdom... Of course you could just mix it all those ideas and have some parts more crude than techno.
And yeah eventually I'll have a new map, but for the moment I am enjoying the special few i have at the moment...:D

I like the idea of using a nether portal. Perhaps build a huge piston elevator in the nether that leads up to another nether portal that leads to the main floating island?
hmm..... unsure if vertical would work, but maybe... what i was thinking since i would assume the whole patch of islands would be more than 100 blocks apart wide would be that putting one on one end then making a track lead to the other in the nether going up of course. Being at least a bit over 100 blocks away to ensure that the portals will connect to the proper gate every time. And where the other would end up would be on the other side of the complex in the sky... well the way i was thinking on that note...:D

I know x and zed are different but Y value is the same. 100 blocks is a lot. I think the nether portal to the main island is fine because I plan on having a minecart station that leads to the other islands.

Yes that is true, although unsure how it would work in practice, well as long as you make sure to destroy the one in nether and make the cordinates match. And make the second portal first in the nether and match it in the overworld then light it... Hopefully that might work...
Yeah 100 blocks is a lot, however my first kingdom is roughly a little over that size in square/rectangle...with the idea that another kingdom is right next to it so probably making it a bit bigger once that would be finished... Lots of things are really compact...><
Anyway the portal idea probably should work with some trial and error...:D That is assuming they fixed that portal glitch...lol

its better than swimming, climbing a ladder, or using a different elevator that'll cause lag xD
True. The problem is I don't want the island having a huge waterfall coming out of it. I'll probably try the minecart elevator in the the nether with the nether portal idea.

maybe a bug, but it is when you have a portal within 100 blocks of each other. I know they have had problems with it before, just unsure if they have fixed or not. So this is where placement becomes an exact practice. So getting the conversion on the dot is more tricky sometimes...
Basically when you have 2 or more portals and no matter which one you go through it wil come out the first one made. It will still happen with ones that have not been "linked" by doing the exact practice, but yeah that can be a tedious process. Well i guess just be sure you destroy the portals that the game makes and make your own like in most portal tutorials would say...:D

Hmm. The glitch would still happen no matter how far you make the nether portal?
yeah in some cases but i believe that part of it was tamed a bit in one of the prior patches, however unsure if still remains... Basically a for sure way to insure portals connect is 100+ blocks apart... which is the reason i mentioned that before. However unsure if that bug/glitch or what ever it is has been since fixed. Hopefully it has so you could make a vertical... otherwise, i guess plan on having where you want the portal in the sky, and figure out roughly 100 blocks away where it would be below... Which yeah is a bit more nerve-racking for that espcially in this case where vertical would probably be better choice.
So if this glitch/bug still around, then you would have to build 100+ apart each new set of portal you want for them to work. The Y axis as you mention doesn't really matter in this case... just the x,z
I would definitely make the Islands look as natural as possible, even though them being in the air isn't exactly normal, make it look like something out of the movie Avatar! Defniitely make sure the Bottom isn't flat..(Use an Ice cream cone method) and then maybe branch a smaller one UP more? Kind of like how towers sometimes have those branches lifting up a good bit? Kind of hard to explain how i wouuld do it lol.
I like that idea. Someone from youtube named Zisteau used that kinda thing. Look him up on youtube, he built it on a server called Mindcrack. So you should look at his SMP gameplays. It's pretty nice. But as an elevator, he used ender pearls. He's also on PC version. But you could steal some of his ideas. Good idea though.
My suggestion: Prototype this out, every single aspect of it.
There's nothing worse than building something, to find out that it looks horrible/turns out to be a bad idea.
If you draw it out, you'll have a better idea of what to expect when you're done.
One last bit: Each island should have an assigned task, one for housing, one or a few for your farm(s), and an island each for hostile and passive mob spawns, as examples.

Yeah, I plan on putting stalagtites hanging under each island to give it the feel like it was ripped off from the ground. I also understand what you meant by having some of the smaller islands higher than the main one.

My islands I can think so far:
Main island: Purpose is still unknown. Has Minecart station to different islands using this concept. Perhaps a modern city?
Farm island: Automatic wheat farms, sugar cane farms, melon farms, pumpkin farms, tree farm and chicken farm. Probably add a barn house with a silo next to it.
Mob Grinder Island: Carries a huge, giant, high yield monster grinder that is toggleable to turn on or off monster spawning.
House island: Suburban neighborhood with modern houses.
Cake Island: Why not?

Portal glitch? I am curious on what that is.

That is only if it is still there...
