Whenever me and my friends make a new world, we do all the normal stuff first, and then when we get to the nether, its a race to get the glowstone.
i think that glowstone is way to limited in minecraft, and unless you get to it fast then you dont get any at all. and my friends aren't the sharing type.
so my question is, how do you deal with the shortage of glowstone??? i would love to have some ideas
Well, you can dupe the Glowstone. If you aren't into duping it, then you could just wait for Creative Mode and give yourself all the Glowstone you could ever want.
In the next update you can grow pumpkins and make jack o lanterns which have the same light level as glowstone. They look horrendous and are placed somewhat differently but for recessed lighting you'd never know the difference.
I think it also depends on your seed, my world haas a boat load of glow stone and I have a decent amount siting in a couple of different chest. But then agin I really have not come up with a place to put it. I like t he look of torches.. Wish you could make a glow stone torch!
You could also find players that are much more community minded. Most of the guys that I play with and in my world we have "armories" or "community chests" throughout the worlds. Basic rules, if you need it take, then try to replace it.

My friends are basically like that, except when we first get diamonds. After we've had diamonds for a little while, and we start to get a lot, then they go into the community chest. But at first it's pretty much first come first serve.

I need to give out more reputation. I'm not used to the system, but I see so many helpful posts. D: Sorry if I forget you!
In the worlds my friends and I make, we always set up a "Central Storage" where everything goes. We dont really have a rule about it but in general if one of us finds stuff that we don't need right then, it goes in the appropriate chest and after each project, everyone will go empty inventories into them (Except for tools and such with durability bars, unless its diamond) and then go find the next project location. It works well, and we rarely run completely out of anything doing it so hoarding isn't nesecary.

It's hard to find good guys to play with that don't grief or do sloppy builds. I got lucky with the guys that I play with. The most annoying thing for me was that the two times I found diamonds I fell into lava (noob, still am) then when some one new would come into my world they would find diamonds off the bat... LOL! Of course my second world is better and is "invite only".. LOL.. Then I can be greedy!
My nether is the same, huge lava lakes and little clumps of glowstone spread out. Took me hours just to get a few stacks of glowstone.
It definitely helps if you have like minded friends helping out though. A few of my friends are into the resource gathering and actually building so its good to see that a lot more happening.
I dupe moss and glowstone on my world but anything else besides those two, duping is strictly forbidden.
May sound hypocritical but moss stone looks way to good to be that limited in a medieval city setting, along with glowstone.
In an economic system on minecraft, glowstone without being duped really strains the economy and can usually be greatly monopolized by one person with enough f**ks to give about getting all of the stuff first and fastest.
-omfg 420th post. never posting again. okay bye guys
I like to handle glowstone and moss stone like a precious commodity and use them only in ideal places. At times I think it would be great to have more, but other times I kind of like the rarity and like to figure out how to use them to enhance and not use them just because.

Looking for answers myself. I use a TON of glowstone and always run out.
In a "survival" mode of this game, some things should be rare and difficult to obtain. It's part of the "challenge" the game offers the player. There are also several viable substitutes for glowstone in the current version - i.e. torches and jack-o-lanterns.
When 1.8.2. comes out, if you don't want to challenge yourself with the difficulty of obtaining some of the rarer materials by mining them, then Creative Mode becomes your logical option.

The glowstone in my world is so rare that it's all gone now after only obtaining a stack and a half. I'm glad Creative mode is coming out and I don't have a problem using it if it's required. But it really isn't a viable option for people who want to keep their leaderboard stats active for their world.
I don't really see the harm in changing the coding so that a little more generates. They (supposedly) did it with clay generation. Why not glowstone?

Each time something is made easier to find, a bit of the challenge of finding that item disappears. It's a choice - do people want a "survival" game where finding stuff can be a little challenging and they might have to "do without" (just as people "do without" everyday in real life) or do they want a game that hands them everything they could ever want. (Let's face it, "survivial" in this game is mostly dead easy anyway - if you die, you just respawn, run back to the spot where you died and recoup most, if not all, of what you lost in dying.) Minecraft even is supporting options that already enable people to take it both ways (that takes up memory, processing power and hard drive space). With the addition of Creative Mode, Minecraft offers the option of unlimited glowstone and everything else. However, people began complaining about Creative Mode padding the stats, so 4J said OK we'll disable the leaderboards in Creative Mode. Now, they don't want to "do without" the leaderboard stats either, so now they're complaining that the "stuff" in the game isn't easy enough to find and/ or that some seeds have a little less of some things than other seeds or that some seeds may not get all the new stuff. They want "unlimited" worlds. The bottom line seems to be they want to be able to brag about "surviving" without actually being challenged to "survive" in the game... yep, it boggles the mind, boggles the mind. My question is - do people want to actually play this game... or not?
ikr. My dad loves Glowstone and my brother does all the mining it, but they're is only so much of it. I noticed the same problem. What if it could respawn after you mine it... like you mine it and you come back like a day later and it's there again and you get infinite Glowstone!

to add onto that idea... Have glowstone respawn or grow naturally when a specific event happens in the nether... Like some kind of weather thing similar to what happens on the overworld, but more nether like....
For me glowstone isn't used too much as i value it utmost to point where i barely use it for the fact it is sometimes difficult to get and not so easy to find right off at times. That and like everyone here is saying, sooooo limited of a supply. I mean when nether wort comes that will grow in the nether stronghold when it comes why not add some little weather in the nether to even add a bit of atmosphere to it. Well at least not happen as constant as it does on the overworld... That would result in the glowstone naturally just grow...
The weather thing could be any number of things...
1. Earthquakes
2. rain of fire from the lava below, but in the opposite direction that rain falls, as it would imitate the bubbling spouting effect of a natural lava/magma pools.
3. Some kind of wirlwing storm that could be caused by maybe even a new mob that would every so often touch wall and have a chance that glowstone would grow. This can be numerous things too...
Add/expand upon this if you want to, but that is what i can think of at the moment... To integrate it into the game more instead of it just happen to grow/appear. Always have to have it caused by something... After all you wouldn't want it to spread like mushrooms, as that would be overwhelming and a bit too fast. Of course glowstone would only grow coming down from the ceiling or off the edge of netherrack to be more restricting of where it would have chance to spawn...:D
