I think it looks really cool if you put a wall of glass and then another wall of glass 2 blocks away and then you put lava between the 2 glass walls. It looks even more beast if you also put a glass roof and put lava on top of it. You could also put a glass floor and put lava under it so it looks like your walking on lava.
The bad part of doing a lava house is that someone could easily troll you by breaking the glass and letting the lava flood into your house. But if you play single player or if you play with mature people that don't try to troll or grief your houses, this would be way bettter than using water.
Just create whichever one you think looks better or whatever you think would be easier. Its totally up to you what your builds look like. Be creative and just go with what you like. Good luck with your village!
Lava might be a bit more complicated than water, but I'd be impressed to see you pull off a Lava village. So many things could go wrong though, with water it's easy to fix up with merely a bucket.

If im going to make a water themed village I'll probably make water encased in glass as a wall, and probably just make a cobblestone wall if its lava.
Was also thinking of making a large lake in the middle with glass walkways..
