why not think outsde the box. build a village inside of a city. or build village style building on top of skyscrappers. or combined the architecture. or just build both. or just do one mega build.... but if your wanting me to choose one... city. more things you can do with the architecture and you can make some really crazy buildings.
I don't really like villages in Minecraft. They are just very small wooden/dirt/cobblestone buildings together with only the intent of survival. With cities, you are not limited in your creations' heights, materials, etc.

well technically you arent limited with villages. you could build a huge castle village. or build villages however youd like. people limit themselves when it comes to villages. ive seen a few really cool ones.
My preference is building a large castle, surround it with an appropriate looking village, surround that with a wall, then speckle smaller villages around the map. Gives it a "kingdom" feel.

As long as you make a nice village (no tiny wood and cobblestone huts), it will look a million times better than a modern city, in my opinion.
Of course, I would opt for a kingdom, but that could still contain some pretty nice village-esque houses.
