The question was asked if we needed to start new worlds to get all the new stuff.
Their answer:
The answer, thankfully, is "not necessarily". According to 4J Studios' Stuart Ross, new mechanics like Hunger and sprinting "will be universal, so you can play with those features on your old worlds. Just world generation that's different." The same's true of new enemy mobs, such as the dastardly Silverfish.
New terrain types, on the other hand, won't appear in parts of the world you've already explored - but will pop up when you push into the blank spaces on your map. "No changes will be applied to parts of the world already generated, but areas not yet generated will have the new terrain," Rosstweeted yesterday.
We're still waiting for clarification on the fate of new structures like Strongholds - of which players are allotted a maximum of three per world. The key thing to remember right now is thus: if you've got a world in play, stay put. Wait for the update to arrive before venturing further afield. A few other recent Twitter takeaways: the update won't add any additional Achievements, and 4J forgot to mention critical hits in the Minecraft Xbox 360 update 1.8.2 changelog. According to the Minecraft wiki, critical hits are marked by floating sparkles, and are executed when you attack something in mid-air. Don't forget to jump a lot during your first punch-up with the Endermen. (Apparently you can also perform them while sprinting, too - cheers, TinnoUnited.)
I started a world on the seed celtic for the epic mountains and only explored a tiny bit of it. I'm excited to see how the new terrain generation will clash with the old, and I'm excited at the possibilty of getting some new 1.8 stuff in the part of the world I haven't explored yet.
Ummm how many more threads are we gonna get like this? No offense OP but these threads are taking up a majority of the forum and although i'm glad we're not seeing as many "When's the update coming out?" threads as usual these threads are beginning to make me want to come on this forum less and less until after the 1.8 update gets released. Seriously how many people still need to ask about world generation?
It might be something they had to disable to keep lag down. Can't have too many particle effects happening at once.
Borderlands 2 lags like crazy on the 360 because of particle effects.
This leads me to believe that the critical hit may not be in the update. I don't recall seeing it in the change log. I really hope it was not left out.

There are a few things they left off the change log. Swamps were confirmed, yet they aren't in the change log. They also left out the Extreme Hills (Mountains) biome, yet that is also known to be in the update.
It's a massive change log so they probably just forgot a few things here and there. It's still probably in the game.

This is a good post! I wouldn't have found this information otherwise, and it's something a lot of people were interested in having confirmed. Jesus!
Anyway. I'm definitely going to make a new map before the update to see how the terrains interact, should be fun! Actually, I've been playing on one I haven't explored completely, so I guess I'll just avoid exploring any more and see what happens.

Now that this has been officially confirmed by 4J, I can rest and I can promise you I won't be adding to these threads by posting the results of my experiment. There would seem to be no point to it now. Thankfully, I can now just enjoy the various seeds I created for the experiment if I like what happens to the terrain after 1.8.2 hits the deck.

Retired StaffNot to mention, what we already experienced with the new clay generation.
I'm just glad clay is more common in 1.8.

Save and quit.
Wait.
