What kind of mob grinders have you made and how effecient are they? I ask because I have built a couple that are mildy successful but would take a while to build up a lot of resources (i.e. spider string, arrows, bones)
I'm not in dire need of any but it would be nice to have more string since breeding won't be in till 1.2 and I don't wanna spend a week chasing sheep. Please posts and pics and or specs of your mob grinder so I and other players can get a better idea of how to make a good one.

Effecient as in getting the most items in the shortest amount of time. Of course you will have to be patient but only for so long before you start getting bored.
This Is mine. The four towers each have 6 levels. Each level has four 8x8 spawning pads. Thats 144 8x8 pads in total, If I remember correctly. I tested it by a clock, & it pumps out a little over 4000 items per hour.
I created a mob grinder although its not real efficient because the mobs don't die fast enough. Just a word of advice don't use pistons to crush mobs in a mob grinder although its fun to watch it takes a while for them to die...

Well done...The thing that impresses me most is the fact this much work put to a MOB GRINDER and its 100% legit
What means mildly successful in numbers? I have a simple one, dark spawnroom something like 25*25, two levels (could be more..) with a hole where they drop to their death, works good for me.
If you want to make an efficient grinder you must obey these:
1) Your grinder should be the only place where mobs can spawn.
2) The spawned mobs must die as fast as possible.
2) is realized best with fall damage, no long transportation or drowning... 1) is where most people fail at their first try, because they forgot to light up caves and such ..
I have a similar mob drop grinder. Mine has a hole down the center of a long shaft. I do get spiders; although some of the spiders do survive the drop probably because they can sometimes latch onto the sides of the shaft and climb around a bit. Having a number of spiders on the walls of the shaft will slow the grinder down temporarily; but eventually the other mobs falling will knock the spiders down the shaft. If the spiders don't die on impact, I'm ready with a sword to quickly dispatch them. I can convert it quickly to an XP grinder simply by raising the platform they fall onto and being ready with a sword to finish them all off usually with one stroke.
The basic design of it is this one made by FrankTheProGamer from YouTube, except I enclosed the shaft to within 1 block of the ground and dug a 1-block trench around the outside of the shaft where I stand waiting to dispatch the spiders with a sword. As McGizmo pointed out, the key to getting higher drop rates lies in making sure that the trap is the only place within a 144 block area where hostile mobs can effectively spawn by lighting up the surface and nearby caves to a level that prevents them spawning. I only have 1 level so far (which is four 8 x 8 spawn pads); but this is providing more than adequate drops, including string, to well exceed any needs I have for the items. To increase the number of drops, I can always add more levels to the trap.
The bottom of my trap in profile looks like this on all four sides
HS
The sand block can be quickly removed if I have to get farther into the trap to dispatch a "stuck" spider. HS designates a half slab placed so that spiders cannot get out of the trap.

The output varies when I first come up to my grinders they usually have a small build up so I get about 2 of each mob drops at first after that it slow down on average I get 2 zombies and 1 or 2 creepers/skeletons every couple of mins and maybe 2 spiders every 5.

How did you make that mob grinder? I would like to add that onto my world.

Your rates do does seem a little marginal. I checked mine out today and I'm averaging between 70 to 80 drops per Minecraft day. I tend to sleep the nights away when I'm below the grinder because it tends to slow down if I just let things run through the night since more mobs tend to spawn outside the grinder at night than during the day. As I mentioned, my drop grinder is smaller than many since I've only built the 1 level. Most people seem to stack at least two levels into a drop grinder of this style.
i should also add that, on the XBox, the sweet spot for you to stand for mob spawnings is between 24 to 32 blocks away from the spawning pad. When you're closer, they don't spawn and when you're further away, they spawn but may spontaneously despawn. When you are within the range, they spawn like crazy and won't despawn. They also require a fall of at least 23 blocks to die. As a result, my spawn pads are 28 blocks off the ground.
Personally I really only need a grinder for Skeletons, as they give arrows and bones. I dont use much TNT, so Creepers arent a big deal.
What I do is track down a Skeleton Dungeon and just build a room around it with a water floor that shoves the skeletons into a hole with a lava blade at the bottom, and with the bones/arrows washed through a hole for collection. I use the bones for bonemeal mostly, and the arrows I just take and hunt down creepers and spiders in the rare occasions I need more string or want gunpowder.
Suppose after the update I can include a zombie dungeon to make dog food lol.
Right now mobs grinders don't matter if u use it but XP farms are totally pointless because as of 1.8,XP does not do anything beside add something to the HUD

my mod grinder consists of a large water fall so they drown when they swim up and a air patch that he player is only smart enough to use

Not so pointless. True, I did it just to know how to do it; but I got both CDs when I was testing the conversion out. I plan to run it for a time after the update, so I can quickly collect all 12 CDs.
You're just full of negativity, aren't you? or are you just jealous because you didn't think of it? Just because I may not actually get them all that way still doesn't make it pointless to convert the grinder and try to get as many as I can. I am not going to discard a perfectly good grinder just because we're not getting XP in 1.8.2.; and I still have no plans of discarding a perfectly good world just because I'm not going to get more and deeper holes in the ground (i.e. ravines and mineshafts), a stronghold, an empty village, silverfish and cave spiders.

I've been playing with redstone and pistons to allow the sides and roof to open up to let the light come in and effectvely switch it on and off with limited success.
What tends to happen is i will be stood underneith it, open the sides and a load of spiders jump out at me!
Still, after the update I am going to try to make one similar to yours with my on/off switch as I think yours looks fantastic.

Jesus Christ that is an amazing farm..... O_O

The previous statement was FALSE

This is very nice.
I have a similar single tower grinder (using this design - http://www.kevblog.co.uk/how-to-build-a-minecraft-mob-grinder/ ) but its just a big ugly lump of cobble stone.
I only have 2 spawn levels but it kicks out plenty of drops.
