I am working on an adventure map. I was digging a hex tunnel when I found a diamond, and didn't think much of it, I just dug it up and replaced it with gravel. After a minute or so of continuing down, I realized I still hadn't hit bedrock yet, so I went back to where the diamond was and checked my map. Y=19! I thought the ceiling was 16.
If someone else wants to dig down to prove this, and prove that I didn't just do it on my map with a piston, the seed is 794745460. If you go to X = -311, Z= 143 and dig down until you reach 20, then start to carefully excavate the area, you should find the diamond around there.
The absolute highest I ever found a diamond was at y=21, and that was on the Quesadila seed. But I found it in the floor, which means the diamond was actually on layer 19. I wouldn't be surprised if a diamond could be found on layer 20, but it's probably insanely rare.
I was under th impression it was within 17 of bedrock, but bedrock is between 2-5
this would actually make sense and could explain these, except with 16. on PC diamond doesnt go above layer 16, and in those 16 layers is 5 layers of bedrock. if 4j just interpreted it differently and made it spawn with 16 layers of bedrock rather than include the bedrock it would explain all diamonds up to layer 21.
I see. I thought the hard limit was y=16. I guess I didn't factor that bedrock starts at 4 or 5, so above that diamonds can be anywhere up to 21. Just so you know, though, this was an isolated diamond, there were no others around it. (Now I'm doubting, and I'm gonna have to go down the hex again to check for more, dammit!)

that is the hard limit on PC probably with rare exceptions. this seems like its pretty common though on here

the center of a vein of diamond can spawn at 16 or below. But, it spreads out a little, so it has the potential to appear a few layers higher.
