Ok, I was in my slime farm (50x50) and every once in a while a slime will spawn but not really. I just remembered to check nearby caves, so I started digging around the farm. Guess what I find? A huge, huge area at bedrock that my friends expoloded with tnt. Guess who's going to be putting torches in there for the next few days....
Personally I just use a Slime Finder. Except for the map I have on 404, where the cave just happens to be in a Slime Chunk, lol. I made an Easy world on there just for fun.
Slime chunks come in 16x16s, and unless you have 9 chunks in a 3 x 3 square next to each other.....
So basically you have dug out a massive area in which you will have to place many more torches then you will conplain on here about having to place many more torches in an area close by....
I have 4 slime chunks in an 'L' shape, so the area I have cleared out is 48 blocks long in one direction. But you're right, clearing 50x50 is a waste.
It isn't a waste if you need/want the Cobblestone.
Not to mention the other resources. My friends and I dug out a slime chunk group once almost that large and found close to 40 diamonds, stacks of coal and iron, tons of Lapis and almost a double chest full of Redstone. Much Lava too.

I can never seem to make a farm without lava. Haha.
They just take time. And I swear the slime finder is not 100% accurate. Its close, but not dead on. Case in point, in my latest world I found with it that one chunk was directly underneath my main house. I dug a ladder shaft, cleared out the area, lit up all nearby caves, and hollowed out the eight chunks directly surrounding the coordinates the finder gave me. And it spawns slimes.. in two chunks adjacent to the one the finder said it was. I have a viewing room with glass windows that lets me watch for them to appear and I have never once had a slime spawn in the intended chunk.

Clear out the area at Y=12. Any lava you find should be at floor level. Then you can fill it in with sand or gravel. Be careful not to fall in, of course, but at least it won't come pouring at you from above.

You shouldnt count on that. Lava can spawn at any height, I'm careful digging overhead no matter what level I'm on. The "Plenty of Lava" dig I mentioned before had the floor on 12 and two of the pools we had to clear up were two and three blocks above the floor.
when digging up have the stone block be right next to your pick axe, and then quickly switch to put it in place if you spot lava. I always have time when I do that.
