Alright so with the whole creative mode coming out I kind of wanted to get my ice made wall posted before I just get sad that I could click a button and have it added instantly, though it will make fixing that annoying hole in my house easier...but anyway.
So I started learning Minecraft by watching Ethos' videos from the beginning when the PC was rather like the xbox version we have now. He made this little water wall that was oddly effective. But I think the mob behavior has changed since then since his well..most mobs just walked through and I had to restart a few since I was designing this near my ice made house.. >_>
Anyway, after testing and redesigning I came out with a basic design that I would change a bit if I were to do it again...or rather when I do it again. However it works wonders and except for my non-spider defense design, I have nothing breaching my 'yard'
Let me try to figure out this whole picture thing now...oh and ignore my house, I haven't decided what to do with the above ice portion yet.
High overview, just after completion.
Inside view of wall cap, triangle of ice with the water in the middle that won't freeze without access to air.
I didn't have the full set up for a mob trap and collection so I decided on V1 to add a pure kill at the end.
I did a three wide trench, straight drop of four, one over for a flow then the posts stop the water from my lava and everything should fall into there.
For those quick thinkers, no sprint means I can’t jump the three gap and with water I don’t think I could even with it. So I got creative with pistons to make a temp bridge that I haven’t seen a mob successfully follow me across yet, though I bet it’ll happen with a creeper. One of those things I’d do differently, I don’t use redstone well so you’ll see a gap just below the plates and pistons since I don’t know how to do it any other way.
The other design redo is that the mobs float to the top, in all of my tests they sunk and went to the trench. I did change a few things, I know the top ice block wasn’t there, but I don’t think the height changed. Anyway, once creative comes out I may freely redesign it and test it, but working with ice and water was not easy and when the first zombie floated I was like whatever haha.

Yes, annoyingly the current model drowns the mobs in the source block, I have a picture of the first mob to enter cause I drew a zombie in. I could easily fill the layer under the signs to funell drops into spots but I took too much time in doing what's there and I felt it was easier to be safe than sorry.
My original intention was to drop the mobs into the trench then bring them onto the second drop and burn them to death before funeling the drops. But that was a long term plan that I stopped once they swam up and drowned before entering the lava trench haha.

Protip for you, read. I know signs work to stop flow, not only is my entire wall lined with them but I also said the mobs are currently drowning before even reaching the lava. Not like it matters, my wall wasn't built as a mobtrap more for a mob repellant since I have to stand on the edge to draw them into their death it's not really worth it to try and gather anything, mobs don't tend to walk into a solid water wall too often. Animals are funny though.
But I should have built my house closer to my mob trap, now I have to work a rail system into my home to do it cause I am not extending this wall at all.
