You might not be very excited for new food options coming in 1.8.2 but I'm here to change your mind.
Quick! Tell me what food is the best to replenish health/hunger quickly... Assorted cooked meats? Bread?
WRONG
Melon Slices
"they only restore one hunger bar." "you gotta find seeds in abandoned mineshafts." "they are so useless."
Pick your jaw up off the floor and read these facts.
-After growing the initial batch of seeds obtained from the chests, the player can grow additional melons using seeds crafted from melon slices without having to find them in chests.
- A single harvest can provide plenty to eat for long periods of time.
- Each melon slice restores and 1.2 points of food saturation. The high volume, low calorie nature of melon slices makes it somewhat like portable cake in that each consumption is almost never wasted on overhealing the hunger bar.
NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO YOU WILL HAVE FOOD.
Let me give you some simple numbers just so you realize just how well off you will be.
-1.2 per slice.-
- 64 per stack-
- Infinite life -
SWEET MOTHER OF MINECRAFT, THAT'S INCREDIBLE.
Well guess what? We're just getting warmed up. It's time to show you the magic that is a fully grown melon.
"I would take that block behind the elementary school and get it pregnant." - Everyone all the time.
Bread takes timmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmme. Gotta harvest that wheat and bake that bread and then waste it when you only need like one heart... Melon slices give you what you need when you need it. Perfection.

I have never grown a melon before. I actually don't know why considering I've been playing since Alpha on PC. Maybe I've just never thought about it, found seeds or known how to. I actually have no memory of ever looking at the Melon page on the Wiki so I probably never knew how to grow them.
I'm gonna make sure to grow some on 1.8.2 for Xbox, just some questions. Is it the only food which can have 64 per stack? Also I think I've seen people grow like 3 melons from one seed, is that possible? And how many slices do you get per melon?
I have to disagree here shrooms are far superior to melons. They grow on all solid blocks that are a few blocks from light sources. If all lighting comes from the roof (and no sunlight) and the floor is not glass or halfslabs, it is a shroom farm. This is just about everywhere you go. You just have to drop an occasional shroom off so it can fill the room and when you come back they are everywhere. To make this even better water uproots them so a piston a water block and a trench will quickly harvest your shroom farm with no digging or more work than flipping a switch twice. Shrooms are common in the nether and in caves. Finding that first set of melon seeds will be more of a pain than finding one of each shroom.

EDIT: I stand corrected. Now that the update is out and I have melon seeds, I realize just how useful they are.
Knowledge is power, guard it well.
Seriously though , I like mushroom soup :P. .
But you have to hunt down shrooms. MELONS HAPPEN
Aright then apples.
Apples are the master race of food .
Go to a tree hit some leaves BAM free apples.
except... bread is lame.
Apples rarely drop.
Okay okay I accept defeat you have convinced me that melons are the best growable food atleast .
Edit: But if I was a farmer, I would definitely choose melons as my main crop.
Fish take too long too catch and cook. MELONS ARE SUPREME
