Hey. I made this project out of Obsidian. I thought it might make a good hotel design. But in the end it just looked liek crap. anyways after i made that mistake It was 2 4 high rooms And it took me like a month just to get it off. Did any of u guys make a mistake like that?
Hardly ever.. I always think twice before placing down an Obsidian block. Because most of the time I only use/carry an Iron pickaxe, & to break an Obsidian block with that takes forever.
My friend keeps coming on my worlds and building large square obsidian monstrosities.
The practical use of them is they're almost invicible and would take any griefers hours to do any exterior damage.
But god are they ugly.

I put my shirt on one leg at a time, just like everybody else.
I had that happen to me building with obsidian, also thought a whole building of it would look cool and then realized after half my building was finished that it wasn't as cool as I thought lol here are some pics of the finished project, though I didn't remove the entire lot of obsidian I did have to mine back a lot of it...
This is the finished work
This is before and what you can see because I didn't take a picture of it, was the monstrosity on top that I didn't like
Dig one bock under the Obsidian. Place a soil block in it's place. Get a hoe and till the block under the obsidian and plant some seeds and the Obsidian will disappear. Sadly you lose the block, but quicker than mining it. You can always get more by pouring water over a load of lava anyway.
I'm pretty careful with obsidian, used it a ton in one of my projects and luckily it worked out. I'm also glad I made it before all these updates, cus yeah it took forever, and that's part of what gives it value to me. A tip if you want to use it, obsidian does not usually work well alone (in my experience). I personally made a design with obsidian and lime-green wool that turned out really well. In case anyone asks, I refused to dupe under any circumstances in that world, and even more so that project... many hours were spent collecting the resources for that. xD
Obsidian has it's uses. It's not a particularly "pretty" material, but with a blast rating of 6,000 (as opposed to stone, which is 30), it's essentially indestructible.
I built a tower keep with an obsidian core: 20x18 and 3 interior storeys, essentially a gigantic hollow obsidian cube. Not exactly great looking inside... but the outside is nice looking since I put layers of smooth stone over it, it's impervious to creeper explosions, and "griefer-resistant", lol.
No duping, I cast it in place. Having 29 buckets & large lava lakes in your mine helps a lot.
I'm building an entire castle in the nether out of obsidian and I think it's turning out quite nicely, thank you very much. The trick with obsidian is to treat it like cobble. It's texture does not look good at all over large flat surfaces.
Unfortunately, I find that obsidian just doesn't look good under sunlight, it works much better in the nether where the ambient glow adds a red tone to it. If they would bring crying obsidian into MCXBLA, it would add a nice option (much like the mossy cobble). I also find that smooth stone doesn't work very well against obsidian, I think the blue tone it carries clashes. I've settled on standard wood and cobble as a nice complement to it.
(One thing I hate is how poorly nether screen shots work. The ambient lighting doesn't show up so the shots alwasy turn out darker than they look on your screen. I've tweaked the contrast on this photo
so you can see things a little better. Unfortunately, this has the effect of enhancing the contrast between the cobble and obsidian, making the work look a little less snazzy than it realy does..

Yeah, I could imagine it working well in certain designs, but it can tend to clash. It'd be nice if they added in aesthetic options for obsidian, like maybe smelting into a material that's like its smooth stone, or giving it a sort of "lavarock" glow in its cracks (that may be a little too much). Another thought is having a way to give cobblestone (and obsidian) the "mossy" version. Rather it not be something too complex but also not something that will be easy to randomly do (such as sitting in a swamp biome for some time; bit on the easy side, but it seems to be what makes the most sense). To be honest, I don't mind the rarity of mossy cobblestone, but I'd love to get mossy obsidian (it'd probably be my favorite block) and it wouldn't make a ton of sense to be able to make mossy obsidian, but not cobble...
i dont build with obsidian, but when i build something, i think twice before i save.. that way if i dont like it, i can just exit without saving and not have to deal with taking it down later

This.. obsidian is ugly. I like the tower in the nether though. Looks good.
I save before I do a project I think I might not like.
When we get creative I plan on putting a layer of obsidian inside my castle walls.
Only things I've used Obsidian for except Nether portals is an outer castle wall. It was three thick, with a walkway on top, smooth stone inside and outside with a redstone cast Obsidian core.

Yea i made a bad mistake. damn it Anyways im just happy its gone

Neat trick.
