Torches may be one of the easiest, but some light sources glow under water, and some you can turn on and off.
So what light source do you guys think is the best?
Sunlight - it's the only one with the power to light up the whole map at once, it doesn't burn down the house... and frying the skeles and zombies makes it kinda cool tool.
Above water, torches give you the most bang for the buck. Cheap and easy to make, and almost as bright as anything else. Glowstone is in short supply in our version. It would be the next best, and it works well underwater.
Lava - try depositing several lava source tiles on the floor, walls and roof of your house; presuming you made a wool and wood house, you'll be able to see for blocks in just a few minutes, no lie!

Great suggestion, I like to use lava lighting but hate how it flows and no infinite source.
A stone floor with glass covered lava lighting works well. Just place a source block for every block if you can not stand the flowing like me.
Don't quote me, but I think glowstone is brighter. Lamps are great for the ease of making light switches though. Plus you don't have to worry about collecting slime or crafting pistons.
Tbh, I'm not sure what OP means by "best" so I'll make a little list of what I think is the best, based on different things.
Easiest to wire: Lamps/redstone torches
Brightest: Glowstone (Perhaps rivaled by lava?)
Most economical: Coal torches
Best decoration: Jack-o-lantern/glowstone/lamps (personal opinion)

That's all I can think of at the moment.
I based 'best' off of best for building advanced functioning things. I am really looking forward to working light switches lighting my creations!
Light Level 15 is highest, and at current jack-o-lanterns, glowstone, glowstone lamps and the sun produce it.
Torches produce level 12.
Lava iirc maybe 12 or 15 or some other number, I measured it once, but do not remember it.
Personally I like using jack-o-lanterns since they are very cheap and easy to produce. Glowstone requires a bit of work, but if got enough of it I rather make lamps unless got a silk touch pickaxe somewhere.

Torches produce level 14 light, lava is level 15.
I'd use jack-o-lanterns more if pumpkins weren't so dang rare, but that'll change once they're farmable.
I like glowstone the best but going to the nether to get it is a pain in the ass, I like the jackolanterns also because they're pretty bright but again they're rare as well(some people can't find them on certain seeds) then the most common....torches which aren't too bright but get the job done if there's enough of them. if you don't mind going to the nether and mining the very high up glowstone then go for it because imo it's the brightest(and best) light source

Retired StaffUnless we're talking about interior lighting, then it's glowstone all the way!

The Lava ORB looks to be the brightest....

under water, jack-o-lanterns as soon as we get the ability to farm pumpkins because then they'll be renewable

Retired StaffActually, both a powered lamp and a glowstone block have a light level of 15. Equal luminosity
