So I am new to minecraft but get some of the ideas. However i still have a few questions. I have a basic house made out of stone but what other house building materials are there what what are some of the pros and cons? I am starting to look for iron but what is a good place to start? This forum i hope will help others answer some questions they might have.
Thanks. I also made an underground bunker and when i go to sleep i get attacked by monsters...i know there is no way they are getting in and there is enough light as there is a torch on each wall. Has anyone else had this problem?

Check your light levels. One torch throws a maximum light level of 14 and that is only on the block it is actually mounted on. The light level reduces by 1 level for each block away from the torch. So the 4 blocks (2 on either side and 1 above and 1 below) each have a light level of 13. ( I'm a little less sure of the diagonals... they probably have a light level of 13 on half and 12 on the other half. If not, they would have a maximum of 12 on the whole block.) Monsters may spawn on the floor blocks and at any light level below 7, so they may spawn on any floor block that is 8 or more blocks away from a torch. Obstructing partial blocks can further reduce the light level on adjacent blocks. Although the area may seem light enough, the mathematical light level may just be low enough to spawn monsters.
Other factors - Do you have double doors? They're generally not a good idea on the area where you're sleeping since they're known to be glitched. Is your bed up against the wall or in a corner? This also apparently plays into a glitch that can result in the unexpected spawning of monsters beside your bed.
I did have double doors and my bed was against a wall. I will also check my light levels too cause that could be a factor. I will change things around and let you know how it works. thanks.

I've heard of people having issues with double doors. Try removing one of the doors and placing a couple blocks there.
Look for iron in caves, it is the second most common mineral besides coal. Caves usually have an entrance on the surface. Make sure you always have torches and food on you. Especially food since 1.8 is probably coming out soon and you need food or you'll starve to death.

It will answer all of your questions. Keep in mind that we do not have some things that are shown in the wiki.
