Hello i made a wheat farm and i made a dirt walls and a glass ceiling above it and a wooden door to keep animals out then i planted my wheat in it so while i was waiting for the wheat to grow i went and road on my railcart system (staying within space needed for the wheat to grow) then i went back to check on it there where like 3-4 animals that spawned inside my building and where walking all over my growing wheat and killed it. any idea why they spawned inside the building and how to stop it???
If you have any grass blocks or untilled dirt blocks and/or unplanted blocks inside the area, the passive mobs may spawn there. Make sure that all the dirt within your wheat farm building is both tilled and planted and that should keep them from spawning there.

Make sure all the dirt is tilled. Also, change the title because it's kinda misleading.
Yes, but it all needs to be tilled, hydrated (water source nearby) and planted. Then it won't spawn mobs. If you till it, but let it dry out, it will revert to normal dirt and eventually grow grass, where farm animals can spawn. Replace all walkways with something else, like gravel.
(staying within space needed for the wheat to grow)
hold up. you have to be within a certain about of blocks for the wheat to grow? i planted my wheat about 7 minecraft days ago and it still isnt fully grown. im always in my cave systems though is that why it wont grow?

No, he isn't talking about the player. He means the water and the tilled dirt/seeds have to be within a certain distance apart from each other.

why wont my wheat grow then? i got a auto wheat farm and auto sugarcane farm. i know the auto wheat farm works because i use the same design on another world and they grew. they wont grow on the one for some reason...

I think you have to be within a certain distance, or the blocks in your farm won't be updated. Check the wiki for more info. Good luck!
Yeah, I was disappointed to learn that my tree farm wouldn't grow if I was at my usual base of operations on the other side of my world. I've since built a mob spawner, and now I have oodles of bonemeal. When I want to see something grow ASAP, I use that.
From the wiki:
"Wheat crops will only grow under the following conditions:
It is directly above a block of farmland. If the farmland is removed or reverts to dirt, the wheat crop will be broken.
The light level above it is at least 9 (doesn't have to be sunlight)
There is at least one block of empty space above it (transparent blocks count as empty)
The player (any player in SMP) is within 7 chunks (~120 blocks)"
Hope it helps.
I think it also depends on a cycle of random growth ticks, much like the trees. I've watched a sapling suddenly pop to become a huge oak right before my eyes in one tick. Similarly, sometimes the wheat seems to just suddenly grow and other days it just seems to sit there and do nothing (without bonemeal, of course).
My fastest growing wheat farm is my first. It 1) is above ground, 2) is small, just two rows of 7 seeds (14 plants total) 3) has an irrigation channel in the middle that I eventually filled up so there is no water current (It also serves as an infinite water supply), 4) has torches for additional lighting at night, 5) is encircled in glass blocks (2 high) on every side except the roof (so it's more like a greenhouse), and 6) is within about 10 blocks of my bed at my main base (so I'm in the immediate area frequently). Without bonemeal, I'm able to harvest and replant almost every 2nd or 3rd Minecraft day. It's not automated, but it really only takes a second to just walk in the water channel punching plants to harvest and popping in the seeds I get to replant. Since the tilled land is also irrigated and nothing walks on it ever, I almost never have to retill the soil.
I can make 4 bread from every harvest and 5 from every second harvest, so it provides a "daily bread" to the larder just on its own. With some bonemeal, I think I could definitely keep up with the hunger bar - just might not get much else done.
