I am one of those people who likes to create, not just buildings and towns but history and backgrounds behind them. i am partly venting an partly asking a question. first of i am upset because of the simple lack of depth they give paper and books.
Whats the use of a book if nothing can be out in it, not to mention the dinky amount of space signs give you! I am planning on making a massive complex over multiple floors and naming it the library of knowledge. it will be filled with history and many other facts about the world and things in it as well as giving some clues and secrets to treasures and lost room deep underground or in the sky. it will all be done on survival with no duplicating so it will take a long while.
but i also want to know if anybody else has thought of or has done this before? is so then feel free to share a thought or picture about it

I forget when they added written books, but they will be added. Also, I have an entire unwritten history for one of my maps, with a whole pantheon of gods and a new Herobrine mythos.
In the most recent versions of the PC edition, there are editable books... check the wiki. I don't know if we'll ever get them though, but it would be REALLY nice to have one chest of copies of a "guide & rule book" at your spawn for visitors... instead of thirty signs that everyone will just ignore.
If we ever *do* get them... I can see writing tons of weird tomes for players to find & read, ala "Elder Scrolls". The many books really are one of the best features of that game for me.
We may get "book and quill"s in a later update. I think it's 1.3
The library of knowledge reminds me about a short story I read in english class.
I think that 4J is committed to bringing us up to 1.2.5; after that, they go their own way. Book & Quill didn't appear until snapshot 12w17a, which became part of 1.3... so we might not get it. It'd be a shame if 4J didn't include it at some point though.
On the PC, I like having one handy to make notes in like a journal. Useful for keeping coords & the like. It's also fun to leave them laying around in multiplayer... especially with bogus info in them }:)
I do build things with a bit of backstory or theme.
I have a desert city where the temple was built by people who believed another world existed that could be reached by a portal. So the floor of the central chamber has a 4x6 stone "portal" with a hole in it to descend into the "nether" world which is really a "holy" cave complex. The city itself, has no true Nether Portal. But in ancient times, apparently they existed, and the religion grew around that.
In another world, I've protected, and even restored the very first shelter we built to survive the night, only to suffer disaster upon exiting the shelter in the morning. So there's this primitive "hut" surrounded by the wall we built, with a huge crater where the Creepers attacked.
Whats the use of a book if nothing can be out in it, not to mention the dinky amount of space signs give you!
They're called props. Mostly though, they seem to be an interim craft item towards getting bookshelves - which just add a little color into interior decors ATM.
When I'm playing a game, I'm not one who likes to have to pause to do a lot of reading and/or writing. I have to do too much of that for work. It'll be, I'm sure, a great feature for some when we get it, but I personally probably won't use it much.
I like historical buildings; but the history or the specific building or it's era is evident in the building itself.

Great Idea. If we do ever get writable books, this is a great application. Maybe only after unlocking one room's secrets can you access the next room? I'd hate to know everything all at once, maybe have multiple "halls of knowledge"? Still, great idea.

well in a later version of minecraft you get the ability to write in books so once we get to that point here on xbox you will have a use for them
I don't know about adding lore to my world or anything, but lots of stuff in my world has backstories.
Like how my avatar in the world is an eccentric billionaire who likes to refer to himself as Chikka Bow Wow Inc. Chikka Bow Wow Inc. keeps the armory supplied and funds building projects all over.
Or an abandoned house on a hilltop that remains barren because it's "haunted" (The haunted sounds are a result of the nether portal built underneath it)
Or how the lighthouse is secretly a church.
Or how a nomadic engineer invented the concept of a "Tree-gloo" while arguing with the local pirate captain that he could build something cooler than the Galleon docked outside of the harbor.
And there's the sky-scraper that's still only standing because the building found new use when someone invented the sport of extemely-high diving.
Just stupid little backstories like that, worht a chuckle, and adds a bit of character to things.
Here I was thinking I was getting too absorbed making a history to go along with my world. I'm glad to see I'm not alone. I built my city to show a passage of time. I rarely demolish buildings. Even my crappy early bulids are left standing and represent different eras. I also have hidden chambers and symbols which represent a secret society which secretly runs things. I also have a cemetary with graves that contain artrifacts like the battered armor my character was wearing when he died. Plus its a cool way to store the never ending supply of bone I get from my spawner trap. It has gotten to the point where I no longer remember where every historical site is. I have run into a few that were complete surprises.
The library sounds like an awesome Idea. I wish we had a better use for books than mere decoration in the current version.

Let me assist you in this world of knowledge.
