I've actually managed to meet a few decent players while playing on open worlds, which got me thinking. I hear people complain all the time about finding other players, and complaining about "waiting" for the new patch. Why not solve both of these problems at once?
OPEN WORLD PROJECT
Goal:
To help like minded people find one another in a more organic way.
To Participate:
1. Load your world, uncheck "friends only" and check "allow friends of friends".
2. Turn off Auto-Save
3. Fool around and wait to see who shows up.
I'd like to encourage EVERYONE to try this while we wait for the update. Think how awesome it would be to turn on MC and see dozens of worlds for you to check out? Lets turn MC Xbox into a lobby based MMO!!!
(Some tips for hosts)
1. Place signs at the spawn point indicating PvP, duping status or whatever so newcomers know what to expect.
2. Show off your world, or start a new one. The point is to meet people.
3. If you get bored, drop to the main menu and see if anyone else has a server.
4. Post in the Find Players section (http://www.minecraft...1-find-players/) and use OWP in the title AND in the tag. (If it's in the tag, people looking for open worlds can find it easier.
5. If you have issues with lag, start an XBL party chat and invite any newcomers. You can also limit the number of players. (Just be polite when kicking people out.)
(and lastly a note to the moderators, this is not in the find players section for a reason. I'm trying to get true community involvement in the project, not trying to get people to add me or come to my server. Please don't move or lock this. Thanks!)
Good idea, but Xbox Edition only holds 8 players per world. When you do get that many, the connection gets so laggy, no-one can get anything done. Maybe someday, they'll add dedicated servers, or the option to rent a server, like Battlefield 3?

Sent from either my Sony Ericcson Xperia Play, or my XBOX 360 running Internet Explorer...I forget which.

I really hope they do because I get extremely laggy at 3 players at once and I'm opening a server on Sunday.
I've been on a few 8 player servers that had no lag. Most of the time I've had lag it was because the host was using a wireless connection, or people were in the game chat. I'll add those two suggestions to hopefully spark more interest in this.
Another idea could be to make a list of players participating in this project, it would make it easier for people looking to check out other worlds. A user could post their gamertag here and say that want to add it to the list, which would be in the OP. I don't know about you, but I rarely see worlds hosted by people I don't know in the list of active games. This might help things get a jump start in the right direction.
I've actually seen a huge increase in available games lately, but I'm not sure how much of that is from this post, or from word of mouth asking people on the servers to start opening their worlds. With the addition of mining rights, I expect we'll see a ton of stuff open up after the update.
I hadn't included gamer tags, as I didn't want to get moved to the Find Players section, but if there's interest I have no problem adding those to the original post.
I had to look up the meta tag, and although it's a simple concept, it took a while before someone explained what it was, rather than just providing a list of tags.
For those that don't understand, this is basically a "Silver" XBL account that we all add as a friend. This would drastically increase how many people could join your world. I'm going to create an account this weekend, and post the tag. Even with building rights, this should help expose people to new potential players.
I have seriously considered leaving my survival world open but I tried it and it was an instant failure. But maybe once 1.8.2 hits and we have those host privileges, things will be a lot different.
Although, I have had a few new folks in from the UK and Canada so still able to meet a lot of people this way with it closed. I can definitely enjoy playing with people that actually contribute and build, not just ask for all of my hard earned resources.
I like the idea, I have made some new friends from the forum and Minecraft, (used to only play COD) and have left my world open. But had one griefer (had a friend of a friends friend come in and grab all my arrows, shot me a couple of times, and then leave the game with the arrows in his inventory) so when I do that I set the game to invite only sadly.... I would like this to happen with every one being able to build what they are, or feel thay are, good at.
The lag is horrendous with only 2 players. Shame, it's just sad.
It also depends on who ya play with bud. I play with more then 3+ all the time and we do not lag all that much until my friends from the UK or australia pop in the world.

Gonna give it a try.
